Company says jet had eight crewmembers aboard; some reported injured
[BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) -- Local authorities say a flower-laden U.S. cargo plane headed for Miami has crashed near the Colombian capital, killing two people on the ground.

None of the plane's crew have been reported killed Monday, although some are injured.
It is the second crash in two months of a Boeing 747 flown by Kalitta Air of Ypsilanti, Michigan.

This place has its issues. Conrad Kalitta has been known to bully his crewmembers into doing things! My friend that worked there for 3 years said that their takeoff breifings are not if, but when we lose an engine on takeoff! I sure hope the feds are taking a close look at this place.

Connie will continue his unsafe practices until the FAA shuts him down. There are many outstanding pilots and flight engineers at Kalitta but even with their skills and training it is nearly impossible not have incidents/accidents while flying Kalitta's armada of junk. A friend from Delta spent two years at Kalitta while on furlough. During his 2 years at Kalitta, he had four catastrophic engine failures. On each occasion, he and his crew handled the situation flawlessly and safely landed the jet. He was then brought to the office in Ypsitucky, MI for the Connie carpet dance, coqs@cker briefing and troll intimidation ritual. Needless to say, he took his recall back to Delta.

My guess is that Kalitta still has many in charge in flight ops who aren't even qualified on the aircraft that they are managing.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Best of luck to all Kalitta pilots.

Scott Kalitta Dies in Fatal Drag Racing Crash

Englishtown, N.J. - Scott Kalitta, 46, was killed during the qualifying round of the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. The fatal crash caused drag car racer's Scott Kalitta to go out of control, and crashed according to the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). Scott Kalitta is survived by his wife, Kathy and sons Corey, 14, and Colin, 8.

After the crash, the NHRA emergency crew removed drag car racer Scott Kalitta from the vehicle. Scott Kalitta was then "brought to Old Bridge Township Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead," according to the NHRA.

Media reports have been slightly more graphic, including the report that the car "crashed and burst into flames," from the Associated Press (AP.com). That description has been picked up, as has "fiery crash," by media, but the flames and fires are not mentioned on the NHRA.com web site.

There has been no official word on what caused the car of Scott Kalitta, a Funny Car driver, to lose control.

No kidding!!! Didn't they also have an engine land in Lake Michigan after falling off a Kalitta B747 a couple years ago? That outfit is a hazard.

Yes they did. My buddy was the co-pilot. He just about $hit himself. They were over a thick stratus layer at the time and at the moment thought that the engine might have landed on a house or car or something.

The Captain did a smart thing and noted the time the engine fell off. Once on the ground and with the time written down, they overlayed the time hack with the radar track with ATC, and were able to tell that the engine fell into lake Michigan.

My friend ended up quiting and is now at UPS.

Not a good day in YIP, looks like a DC-9 from USA Jet crashed in Mexico.
