I just had the pleasure of flying with Mr. Anal rentative #1 himself. I'm just wondering what types of things / issues you guys have encountered with these "types"?

I can tell from the size of your post,
that's propably your PEN!S size.

You should be proud.
Miget's need lovin' too...

Oh and did I mention that they are ususally bitter regional lifers.

I'm sure the majors have their share of "McCainiacks," too. I'm just glad we don't pair for a month at a time! I think I can put up with anybody for at least a 4-day trip. If it didn't teach me anything else, the Navy taught me how to get along with the "lifer" type!

Maybe he's been PFT to get that Captains seat and his wife is mad that she's not getting her new BMW for Christmas!!!

Maybe he had aspirations of becoming an ag-pilot and he's mad because avbug said he would be called a "Hick" or "Cowboy" on this board. Now that would be enough to cause anybody a bad hair day

Maybe he has discovered that his direct track to an internship has lead him to a spot that will have virtually NO movement for the next fifteen years, and he was planning on flying to Paris once a month.

And it all depends on...

What the captain was being particular about, of which no mention was made. Some folks don't mind loose & fast while others see such as poor form or outright sloppiness.

I am with riverrat.

What is it that he was particular about?

Did he want you to actually pick up the check-list and eyeball it instead of recite the easy parts like at Gulfstream? Tell us the whole story. Or perhaps, just perhaps, he was acting as a Captain should during the rare occasions when the FO is trying (not suceeding) to run the show and walk on the captain.

Then again, he could have been a miserable "regional lifer".

Cornbread, do me a favor- go f.uck yourself! I never went to Gulfstream. You don't know me so why are you getting personal with me on this board?

The guy had been at the regionals for over 5 years. So I have to ask myself, why did he never make it to a Major during those great hiring years in the mid to late 90's? Now other FO's have to deal with his s.hit because he's bitter. **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** lifers.

Sorry. I didn't mean to strike a nerve.

I thought you had been at the stream since you know (what sounds to be like) Uncle "H" so well and that you are now at Airlink. Just doing the math. Did you by chance get interviewed and hired by COEX right before 9/11? My apologies if I am mistaken.

Sorry if I was "lame".

Isnt that a little bit short sighted?

Before putting labels on people lets do some math. During the hiring boom, how many professional pilots were there versus the number of available jobs? I will be the first to admit that prior to 9/11 hiring at the majors/regionals/135 had reached amazing levels but even then that does not mean that everyone was automatically going to find a seat to sit in at the majors.

Ever stop and think that the Captain that you are so fond of is happy with his senority and his lifestyle or possibly his lifestyle/family situation would not/did not allow him to make a change when 'every one' was getting hired!

I dont know you from Adam but geez! So you had a bad pairing, get on with it! With the way the state of the industry these days do you really think it that wise to be airing the laundry on a public forum? And when you have a moment, go to the local video store and rent the movie the 'Caine Mutiny' staring Fred MacMurray and Jose Ferrer. After that, if you are still unhappy, then try taking up your grievance with someone who can make a difference!

cornbread: I don't follow you... who is Uncle "H"?

And to ms6073: I'll air whatever the h.ell I want to on any public forum. Thanks for your advise but please shut the trap.

This board used to be so much better and friendlier. Now I ask a simple question about what type of crap people have had to deal with from a-hole Captains and then people start to rip on me?

The Caine Mutiny is a winner, but let's not forget the actor that made it all worthwhile: Humphrey Bogart, as the disturbed Captain Queeg.

flight-crew, just a suggestion: from everything that I read about CRM, from talking with our most user-friendly instructor/captain, and from a netjets captain I know who taught CRM at Comair, there is a need to standardize the calls and procedures for efficient operation. I'm sure I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know, right? So far, I've seen a wide range of what different people consider to be their role in the CRM chain, and I'll bet that you have, too. Was this guy so far over the top that he was out of line, or was he simply requiring what your company has decided are the correct procedures?

I know that I get irritated when I make several flights with a captains who are a "one man crew", and then I have to fly with the comapany president or our check airman, and I get hammered because the "usual suspects" that I fly with are not keeping me up to speed by doing things the same way, each time.

Is it possible that this captain was just trying to reinforce some good habits?

My opinion is that most of these Cappies who appear to be over extending and show us who really is boss, for the most part are just trying to do a good job. SOP all the way down to touchdown and parking at the gate. Great!!! You know what, it's company policy and rules and regulations sooo, sure why not.

But, there is a slight percentage out there who perhaps want to do a great job but don't really have the people skills to get it accross. I.E. call this, do this, don't do it that way, wait don't talk yet, don't call it that time, call it this, let me see your weight and balance lets be sure it's right. Just little remarks like those that keep flying the whole freakin trip and really drives a nerve! But wait.....he's in charge, it's his signiture on the release soooo..... we have to be good camilians and do the best we can. so I do!!

One guy in particular really got to me and did a little research.... turns out the man is a great human being but happens to be a little afraid of the aircraft. This really put it in context and next time I flew with him just pretty much did what he wanted and next thing you know we're trying to pick up the gals at hooters over a beer.:D

I'm with you, but the food is pretty bad at Hooters, and not worth the T&A.

We have a couple of guys who are pretty nice outside the airplane, but have a Jekyll and Hyde switch when they get into the airplane. Kind of tough to deal with at first, but not too bad when you know to expect it. People skills. Not a bad idea for the career pilot. I went to Dale Carnegie to help develop mine, and after writing and sitting in a room talking to myself (the true essence of a radio job) I needed to rehab my interpersonal abilities.

The Dale Course was about $1,100 three years ago. Worth looking into.

At a regional for over 5 years... wow.

Guess that would make him a 96 - 97 hire? If he had gone to a major, then chances are he'd be furlouged like the rest of us that got on at a regional around that time.... I'd call him lucky instead of bitter.

Is there any possibility your attitude could have caused some tiny deterioration in the Captain's behavior??

Naw, didn't think so....

Maybe you ought to point that sharp finger of perception at yourself for a moment and be real honest with yourself.

It is readily apparent that you have a pi$$ poor attitude.

Perhaps what you call anal on his part is an attempt to correct deficiencies on your part.

You call a 5 year Captain a lifer. That makes me wonder about your experience level just a bit. You are not forthright enough to divulge this information in you profile.

Indulge us with your experience and background so that we may better understand your frame of reference.

He may just be an a$$hole. Then again you may be an inexperienced, arrogant little brat with a bad attitude. Only you can answer that question. It may take a bit of soul-searching and honest self-evaluation on your part.

You can get back to us on that. In the meanwhile we will anxiously await a little clarification on your background and experience to better help us evaluate you situation.

Have a terrific day.

We'll at least it wasn't me. I havn't flown but once this month. Tomorrow I leave for HNL for 5 days and have to figure out how to live on Waikiki beach with only $30.00 per day per diem. The food is easy but I have to buy my crew a Mai Tai for every mistake, usually that breaks me. Guess I shouldn't be so anal retentive.

flight-crew, disregard. I thought I knew who you where based on your first post and others. my mistake.

cheers

Before I was hired at Delta I jumped on a Delta 757 with a real anal Captain. His brief to me, a commuter pilot, was "You know to SHUT UP below 10,00ft, right?" I said, "Ummm Yes..?" He then listened the the FO's brief (he was an F15 guy he told me prior, and he was actually NICE!!!) and then the Captain said, "You are going to put the Autopilot on at 1000Ft AGL because there are studies showing that PAX comfort is better that way...) The FO was pissed. It turned out that the Captain was a sim training guy and this was his one trip this month. I was quiet most of the flight until the Captain misheard the controller on Approach and said he was cleared for a visual on the wrong runway. The FO didn't catch it, and I heard the controller say there were parallel approaches in progress. I said to the Captain that he was lining up for the wrong runway, and he dismissed me. Luckily the tower corrected him eventually and we landed safely. He didn't say thanks to me, and I didn't say thanks to him for the ride. I am sure there are a lot of guys like that, who do not like CRM.

Bye Bye---General Lee

variables ad nauseum

As noted in above posts, good people can & do make poor or bad choices and have the capacity to respond to situations in an unprofessional manner.

It appears that where things go wrong is when people equate a position of authority with power and miss the aspect of responsibility inherent in the position. The benefits of CRM are well documented; sadly some folk insist on reinventing the wheel daily.

Even still, the person who started this thread has not indicated that CRM or lack thereof was a factor. Inquiring minds await thoughtful revelation.

You're right, it wasn't indicated. Not directly.

When someone complains that a superior is being anal retentive, it usually means that something is being required of the complainer, something that the complainer feels was unjustified. I saw a lot of this during four years of academy training. Sometimes it was about the shine on a pair of shoes, or the press on a uniform.

When requirements are expressed in a cockpit, other than "shut up, this is my airplane", it is usually in the context of command and company procedures. His choice of words in his complaint indicate that the captain was demanding, but it does not indicate that he was outside the range of his discretion. That suggests to me that this captain may be adhering to the rules a little too closely for this FO's taste. That would be a CRM issue, since what happens in the area of cockpit communication falls in that area.

Just a thought.

I think we've all flown with someone we thought was anal-retentive. As a first officer you just have to deal with it and do things his/her way. When you get into the left seat someday you will have the power to run the show your way. There are things today that I do that I swore I'd never do when I made it to the left seat. You take on a bit of a different perspective once you rotate your butt across the center console at a different angle.

A little word of advise... watch the sticks your throw for one could be a boomerang and come right back and WHAP you up side the head... You too could be a lifer at a Regional... Have you looked real closely at the Airline Industry as of late??? No one is going anywhere fast...

There are going to be a LOT of "Lifers" at the Regional level...

Just my $0.02 worth

Maybe, just MAYBE the Captain wasn't the one with the attitude problem...

Not making a statement, but merely an observation....
