hiring update

So is the interviewing complete? Have the the 16 vacancies been filled? Will interviewing resume after next bid. Whopping 8-10 interviews/month?

9 of 16 applicants on the first round were hired. 6 of them go to the December class. The remaining 3 go to the January class which will have 7 slots. Pilots hired from interviews this week will fill out the remainder of the giant class of 7 in January. They should be hearing soon. Interviewing and hiring will continue at a similar pace - for now.

good news for all of us who are interested in Alaska. Congrats to those selected and starting class

Any word on the next bid? Next round of interviews??

Next bid isn't out but it's been advertised to be 16 to 24 new openings, posted in November for a March effective date. Mostly going to SEA, reducing ANC by 2 or 3 spots, LAX and PDX will not change. We will see the bid very soon...

soo....

If ANC is reducing by 2 or 3...

and LAX & PDX are unchanged....

then doesn't that mean by process of elimination that ALL 16 to 24 openings would be going to SEA?

just heard...

"baby bid" coming out today or Monday...

8 SEA CA's May 1 effective date.

No new FO positions but 8 new hires required to replace upgraded FO's.

Next bid out Aprilish for Septemberish effective date to be larger than this small bid.

Also...

December new hire class wll have 3 LAX and remainder ANC. January class to be all ANC. Base of other classes will depend on results of this next bid.

Pace of 8 new Captains and 8 new hire FO's a month for forseeable future. (new positions...attrition would add to these numbers)

Is solicitation for PDX and ANC January vacation buy-back related to delays in requaling (as in...initial training) the final group(s) of returning furloughees?

No. Poor planning

Mookie

25 new hire slots for class dates through February.

18 already hired, remainder being hired in next round of interviews in December.

66 additional new hires to begin Fall 2012 with the hiring/interview process starting up in July for a total of 91 new hires over the next year.

ASM growth cut from 8% rate to 6% rate.

This is all due to the anemic economic recovery.

All I can say is....everybody hang on.

Good luck

Don't be surprised when that 6% goes flat or negative in 2012 as the US economy gets dragged into the black hole that is Europe. Fortunately, the 65rs will be starting to leave soon after.....best advice...if you just got an upgrade-pretend you didn't...if you just got back from furlough-pretend you didn't....if you just got hired-good luck because you are going to need it....oh yea...if you are not in one of those 3 groups..just as in 2009, business as usual ..you will be unaffected and the company will be counting on you to carry the extra load...

Chill out T.T.

While Tico has some good points, I don't think its quite so bleak as that. The first Age 65 retirement is in 12/2012. The number ramps up after that. We're short (as usual) right now with the Company begging ANC CAs and PDX F/Os to sell back their December vacations (as if!).

I think the new hires will be fine, though the Company may throttle WAY back on that estimate of 382 new guys in the next three years.

As usual, prior planning is impossible due to the "job silos" in the puzzle palace. The right hand never has a clue what the left hand is thinking/doing. Empire building is a wonderful thing, dontcha think?

To be somewhat fair, with age 65 in place, it is difficult for management to project their staffing needs. In the past, guys had to retire at age 60 or 25 years for the pension. Now, there is that 5 year period past age 60 where pilots can retire at any point and call in sick whenever convenient for them. It should only get worse that all the new guys are on 401Ks and can leave whenever the heck they want with little to zero notice. Of course this does not excuse Alaska for their super short-sighted, zero accountability decisions in regards to manning and the training department. I guess the saying "Life is tough. Its tougher if you're stupid" rings true for some of ALK managements decisions.

Suffice it to say "Prior planning prevents poor performance" isn't in the Angle Lake lexicon.

However, "Thinking weakens the team" is.

I do hope that none of that comes true.....but for anyone who currently works at AS in one of those two groups and does not proceed with caution....shame on them....and for the new guys/gals who are and should be excited about the job...hopefully they can learn from those that just came back how short the trip from ioe to furlough can be

Valid point, Tico.

If you just 'lost your seat to some LA guy', throw a Jr. High girl hissy fit, declare that everyone hired after you is a "silver spoon entitlement kid with a sugar daddy", call the furloughed guys whiney cry babies, and lie and tell everyone that you've quit. Then hope that nobody notices you don't have the balls to back up your sniveling.

This is for everyone hired after May 1st, 2005...... If you had not listened to your daddy or your sugar daddy or your wifes daddy or you wifes sugar daddy or in some cases your husbands sugar daddy and done your own thinking....(not what you typically find in you typical silver spoon alaska airlines copilot) than you would have realized that this place is a $hithole and is likely to continue to be a $hithole and in fact has always been a $hithole........ I have listened to all of you tell me how it is better then (insert large regional airline here)but all of you were senior captains and check airman( well almost all of you)some were just entitlement copilots and some were typical myopic military pilots but you all had a job at the top of your local food chain....You listened to the siren song coming from your checkairman friend(for you military types)or your daddy or your daddys friend etc...for the rest of you....And boom...your little dream threw a rod(pm me if you need an explanation of that term)And now you are furloughed or being force based etc......booh efin hoo.....All of the hiring from jan of 07 on and all of the upgrades were for the purpose of removing the MD-80 from the fleet...period..Those in the know at the time were quite liberal with that information....It is called a training bubble... unfortunateley for y'all, age 65 hit at the same time and the economy took a ********************ter....course the economy takin' a ********************ter could be seen from 3-5 years away......So your out of a job or you aint a captain anymore ore you have to move to a new base....tough $hit.....I have sent about three grand towards the furloughed dudes and dudetes to help them find a home depot job etc....for all the rest of you winey cry babies....get over it...I am making room for someone on march 2nd to stay at this house of cards......yea I lost my capt. seat to some LA guy but I got sick of the noise and just plain quit.....No job to go to but at least I wont have to sit in the right seat and listen to some punk who lands half way down the runway how bad he got screwed........ oh yea and to all of the vsa w************************* and the over 60 w*************************.....none of whom have donated a dime to help your furloughed brothers and sisters....may parkinsons come early to you............................Done here
