airtran rumor

Rumor has it that AirTran will be changing it's name.

I hear the boss came into a recent recurrent class and said he is considering changing the name, but gave no hints as to what it might be, anything would be an improvement in my opinion.

I remember back in '99 when he (Joe Leonard) took over he said he didn't like the name, I guess now he's ready to do something about it.

That is wonderful news! Not to be rude, but a lot of ATA's passengers get ATA confused with AirTran...and we at ATA have a much better safety record and better contract.

It would be good if pax finally could seperate the best from the second best.

Oh, really? That's pretty funny, since your contract was pretty lousy until the new one was voted in last year, and unless your company starts making money soon, you may find yourself wishing you had our contract . . . . which is up for negotiation next year.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but we ARE making money...posting a profit for 2003, so they tell me... Also, there was the public announcement of a tentative agreement on the bond issue, so we're pretty golden until '09...

If he left ATA, I GUARANTEE you it wasn't voluntarily. We have a rather involved probationary program, and not everyone makes it through. My wife works with a woman whose husband "left" ATA in much the same manner as your new FO. His story isn't remotely believable either...

He had been there about 5 years, including a few years in on the L1011 before becoming typed on the 757 (as a F/O). It was voluntary.

Believe it or not, people leave one job for another, voluntarily, for a variety of reasons...personal, professional, family, the perception of a better career move, etc. It is presumptuous and naive to believe that anyone would leave ATA for AirTran only involuntarily.

Take me, for example. I was very happy and excited to be at AirTran. Everything about the job and the company was positive, However, an opportunity presented itself at Alaska Airlines, and for many of these reasons, mostly personal, long term and QOL issues, made it a no-brainer to take the position at Alaska.

Everyone has to do what they believe is best for themselves and their family, Not what other people think is best for them or what they believe they should do.

If I had a "silver bullet" and could drag my wife to the West coast, I'd trade ATL for ANC too, but I don't see either of those things happening anytime soon.

The one I keep hearing is that the name change won't be voluntary. The stock is cheap, the 9's are gone and we have $400 million in cash. Supposedly accountants have been looking at the books.I hope not...

With our current market cap (1.1B)I doubt anyone has that much cash, not UAL or USAir or AA. Maybe Delta (1.4B) but the FTC would not go for it. NWA and CAL (1.0B) dont have the cash. Only JBL may have the horse power,I know it's J. Orenstien!

I don't usually get involved in this stuff, but I gotta ask where some of this stuff comes from.

JB isn't in a position to buy anyone! Not saying anything negative about that company. Just because they are doing well by all apperances doesn't mean they are some money making juggernaught who can go around buying up companies. How would they finance that deal.

The really frightening thought is that mesa might try a bid for Airtran. Now I know this seems far fetched, but consider that that group has a ton of cash and limited ability to grow as they are.

I mean it could happen. It might not be good for the folks that work there but consider..........

Let the emotional ranting commence, but sometimes the most unlikely scenarios......

Hmm, both ATA and AirTran (and most of the other LCCs) are great airlines. Why would AirTran change its name?

But if they are going to change their name, how 'bout:

The last time they changed their name was because of "the accident", so maybe AirTran is planning another accident in the near future? Why else would you guys want to change your name?

In all seriousness, this is not a flame, AirTran is a great airline.
