I think we all just need to realize that we have no control and that this job will continue to get worse and even less reliable; whether it's a result of union or management malfeasance.

Rez, I'm a consumer. I consume wages that my job gives me in exchange for services rendered and likewise I'm a consumer of union services in exchange for 2% of my salary. That's it. It's pretty simple really. I have no expectation that the union's constitutional monarchy will ever be more than a rubber stamp.

I agree with you that it WILL get worse, but I'm ready for it.

Someone else quoted the movie Office Space. How about this one; "I only need to do enough not to get fired." I figure I'll ride this into the ground, when it hits I will find another job. Kind of like corporate officers.

Rez has done more for his fellow pilots than probably anyone else on this board besides Occam. What is your vast resume of experience in assisting your fellow pilots? I agree with you about the Age-60 issue and Prater's backstabbing of the membership, but don't attack pilots like Rez that have worked so hard to improve the lives of their fellow pilots.

Sorry, but what has Rez done? What have I done? Do you even know who I am and what I've contributed? I don't care about anyone's past body of work, when they decide to work against the majority they become the problem. By the way, I'm really sick of people ragging on people who just pay dues but want their wishes carried out by their ALPA reps! It's not an insignificant amount of money, so I can really feel for those who desire results, not platitudes about volunteering.
I have my own important issues, and I'll attack who I need to to get them addressed, whatever their background.

Too bad, I used to enjoy some of his posts. Now, I can only ignore him. You might be surprised how easy it is and how much better you'll feel.

Rez's constant squawking and biiiatching at everybody drives more people away from ALPA than he could ever make up for with good works. I'm a prime example. A couple of years ago I went and stood side by side with him on the Pinnacle picket line on my day off. I won't spend another minute of my life trying to help a guy that constantly berates his fellow pilots (many others I'm sure who have done much more than me) about not being involved or voting in elections or participating in polls that National disregards anyway.

He needs to tone down his rants and drink a glass of reality once in a while, quit lambasting the people that DO participate, and maybe he would have a positive influence, instead of the negative one he has now.

You need to feel good about all this so you'll be an effective ALPA member? This isn't a social club.

i think it's a matter of which will come first -- i happen to think pilots are dying for some leadership... they are finding that the alpa institution does not inspire them. They feel they are swimming upstream. DW ran concession after concession after scope release after scope release= should he have kept his job? I don't care how tied his hands were- if we didn't oust him- what kind of message would that have sent management?

Prater at least has the very real negotiating leverage of saying "hey-i don't have a choice, they got rid of the last guy- i'm not going down that route". Prater has a learning curve though- He really screwed up on age 65 and waffling on the nic award.

It's not that we're never happy- it's that we're not happy w/ what's been going on in the RJ decade. the leadership has let our union look out for only the very senior and the very big, but has made promises to us all. That's not inspiring. I think good leadership happens first = then involvement comes. You think involvement should happen on it's own volition. I think that's unrealistic.

Okay, I am going to reply to this thread even though it is of very little use.

The age 65 change had nothing to do with how well prepared the senior folks were. It had nothing to do with the ICAO, APAAD, ALPA, SWAPA, or whatever other alphabet organization you want to throw out there. It had to do with one thing, and that was "who is going to write the check". That being the check to cover all these recently retired folks who lost their pension. Our underfunded, and over budget govt. had a few choices to make.

What has really happened is another govt. bailout by the employee. A self imposed B scale if you will. So I don't know what all the cheering is about.

The only real victory party going on here is the one they are having in D.C. You know those guys who voted 390-0 in favor of this law. I am sure they are at the club smoking fine cigars, and sipping brandy, giggling like mad over this moral crusade.

One of the better posts on what actually went down with the new Age 65 legislation. With the economy most likely entering in a recession and the industry cutting back on growth, this will make the rule change even more painful for those us stuck in the lower paying jobs. Get ready to hold onto your seats another 3-5 years.

Age 65 was always about benefitting a small minority at the expense of the majority. It is also a major step forward for cabatoge of the industry.

Over at APA, there is a major push for increasing FO pay rates and coming up with some sort of “early-out package” to help mitigate the financial damage to the junior stagnated members. Rez would probably be happy with one facet of the fallout though. The new legislation has finally awakened a younger majority that is only now realizing how badly this rule will hurt their careers.

For what it’s worth, we have been hearing how Age 65 has thrown ALPA’s MEC’s into major turmoil. The possible fixes for Age 65 certainly have our own BOD split on the issue.

The senior guys took care of #1 and screwed the rest of us. Hopefully, this will cause some major leadership changes over at ALPA.
