Engine failures, smoke evacuations.... sheez we are really earning our "overpaid" status this week!

I could be way off base here, but why in the hell would they throw the rubber jungle if there was a threat of smoke or fire in the cabin. Something to do with etops? Not judging, just looking for an explanation

No injuries evidently. That's surprising and very good.

How do you know the masks were dropped?

On the news stations this morning, they have a bunch of hillbillies talking about "it being a horrifying situation", and of course they started taking pictures, they all had the mask on. The looks on the faces of the people getting pictures taken of them was kind of like "so you're the loser that is gonna make this seem like it was something bigger".

I'm glad everything went well...

but I too am wondering why the jungle was deployed for smoke.

I've never flown a boeing...but is there a procedure to dump the cabin to expell the smoke, therefore dropping the masks?

No. That's not a procedure in any airplane I've ever heard of. The CA might get dinged for it seeing as Oxygen feeds fires.

Does anyone know of the cause? Smoker-the-lav perhaps? Blown ballast resistor in the lighting? They spent an hour in the air on the return with smoke in the cabin.

I'm on that same flight next week for a little r and r with the wife. After a few glasses of wine, the wife has me thinkn im to drunk to understand why the haoles bound for waikkiki needed o2 with possible fire in the cabin. Something short and sweet to get the ball and chain on this flight next week would do the trick. Shes not even a pilot and she is calling me out on this. For god's sake, somebody help me before i have to cash in united miles to get her ass there! They do still fly 74's over there..right;)
