Delta executive says no fit for A380 in carrier's system

(Reuters) - The Airbus A380, the world's largest jetliner, does not figure in the current plans of Delta Air Lines Inc, an executive at the carrier said on Monday, citing the reliability and efficiency of smaller aircraft.

"We don't see an application for the A380 in our network," Steve Dickson, senior vice president for flight operations, said during an interview at the AIAA Aviation Forum in Atlanta.

The A380, which entered service in 2007, can carry more than 500 passengers. Airbus has been trying to boost sales of the plane.

Earlier this month, Delta ordered 15 Airbus A321 narrowbody jets in a deal valued at $1.65 billion at list prices. It also has issued a request for proposals for the purchase of as many as 50 widebody jets.

Dickson said planes with four engines such as the A380 were likely "not viable" for most of Delta's markets. "The reliability of the two-engine airplanes and the efficiency of them is just too compelling," he added.

Dickson, who is qualified as a Boeing 757/767 captain and has also flown the 727 and 737 at Delta, also said the carrier was not seeing a shortage of pilots. While some regional carriers have cited problems finding qualified pilots, Dickson said Delta had not seen a big impact yet at its feeder carriers.

Delta is hiring 50 pilots a month for the foreseeable future, Dickson said. He added that the majority of the new pilots were replacing retiring aviators.

"There's a lot that's changing in the industry right now in terms of the career path for pilots that we need to make sure that we stay abreast of," Dickson said. "For example, there are fewer military pilots available. The number of pilots who have been coming out of U.S. flight training schools has been declining for a number of years. We also have a lot of retirements."

At UAL we have A380 pay rates reminiscent of the good old days. Significantly higher then any other Widebody. We were told the company wanted it this way so DAL would be hosed on crew costs if they ever got the 380. That's Smisek's twisted logic anyways.
 
If DL were ever to get A380s, I bet they would be high capacity versions with 800+ seats, and maybe they would be put on LAX to SEA and PDX routes, along with a few daily SEA to ANC flights......all at $69 each way....

At UAL we have A380 pay rates reminiscent of the good old days. Significantly higher then any other Widebody. We were told the company wanted it this way so DAL would be hosed on crew costs if they ever got the 380. That's Smisek's twisted logic anyways.

I highly doubt Smisek thinks past Breakfast....let alone trying to hose Delta's costs.

He's a massive failure.....but he's awesome....in his eyes.

I love the part that he says Delta has not seen an impact yet at its feeder carriers........ He must be ignoring the attrition rate at their wholly owned feeder Bendover Air that is bleeding pilots at all levels. even after promising interviews captains are leaving for national carriers because the success rate of interviews are kept low so delta can keep Endeavor staffed. The E 2 D program is a huge misrepresentation and if some new pilot is dumb enough to come here they will be an. FO for 3-4 years and the. Wait another two for their delta job. If endeavor lasts that long, which at current attrition rates Delta's only response has been to park planes which is causing downgrades-how does a new hire fulfill the requirement to be a captain for two years to flow to delta when an airline is parking planes, downgrading, and cannot hire to keep up with attrition even after announcing the SSP program first and then the E2D program. The general thought among pilots it's a slap in the face (current captains will be training these new pilots giving them experience while telling those same pilots they are not good enough to go to Delta) while FO's do not have the SSP and do not have a flow to delta. Many are just going to give up and leave. Second year pay almost anywhere else will be more than what a 8 year FO at endeavor makes!

You are correct Mr Delta executive, you don't have a problem staffing your feeders, you will have a HUGE problem.

Delta doesn't give a crap about Bendover...They are a tool to squeeze lower rates out of the other Connection carriers...The gullible turds at Bendover really screwed up big time...
