Pilot Group Rejects Tentative Agreement

Company's Final Offer and Ultimatum Not Enough for Pilots
HOUSTON, June 19 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday, June 16, 2006, secret ballots for the Air Transport International amended Collective Bargaining Agreement were counted and certified at the Teamsters Local 747 headquarters. With 165 total ballots counted, 155 voted against the ratification of the new agreement. The agreement was a final offer from the company, which was accompanied by management's threat to shut down the entire ATI operation if the pilots did not ratify the contract.
The parties have been in contract negotiations since May 2004, and under the auspices of the National Mediation Board since last summer. During the course of negotiations, the airline was sold to a company that is now claiming it can no longer afford the cost structure that existed at the time of purchase.
"This local will not endorse a contract offered to our members that comes with an ultimatum," said Local 747 President and General Counsel E.E. Sowell. "The pilots' voices were loud and clear, and they are not going to allow the company to circumvent their responsibility to negotiate a fair contract with threats."
At this time, the National Mediation Board can call the parties back to the bargaining table to continue talks. The Local 747 Executive Board will be exploring the possibilities of issuing a Strike Ballot Authorization vote in the near future.
