Canadian discount airline Jetsgo ceases operations

TORONTO, March 11 (Reuters) - Canadian discount airline Jetsgo said on Friday it was immediately ceasing all its operations and seeking court protection from its creditors.

The privately held carrier said in a release that difficult market conditions and competitive pressures led it to discontinue operations and ground all its planes.

Canada said on Wednesday that investigators had identified shortcomings in the operating methods of the airline, discovered during "a special inspection" into a forced landing of a Jetsgo aircraft in January.

The Montreal-based airline said it would ask Quebec Superior Court to grant it protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act. It said travellers should make alternative arrangements with other airlines.

The carrier, which started flying in 2002, operated 14 Boeing MD-83 and was in the process of adding 18 Fokker 100 commuter jets. It flew to 30 destinations in Canada and the United States.

Jetsgo arch-rival WestJet Airlines Ltd. , based in Calgary, said it has implemented a plan to aid stranded Jetsgo customers, offering special fares on destinations covered by WestJet.

bummer. their flight attendant uniforms were the hottest in the business.

good luck and condolances to all the crews. help them get home.

Their pilots put down $30,000!!!! to get the job. It was a training bond payable over 2 years - most of the pilots, who will get nothing back, only made $35,000 their first year.

A lesson to paying upfront in this environment. Pay for your job, get paid peanuts, lose your job and your money. Pathetic!

Well, at the fares they were charging, it was only a matter of time.
Wonder where the F-100 is going now, probably africa.

Hate to see anyone get kicked to the curb. Yet perhaps this will give Air Canada a bit of leverage in the medium term, at least to those lower-yield sunny spots.

Yeah, but how hot were the flight attendants that were wearing them? :D

Wow....paying for your job and then being paid peanuts with a relatively new company is....sorry to say.......asking to be shafted! Sorry for the guys, but you really should have known better. NEVER put yourself in a situation where you can be shafted by an employer when the alarm bells should have started ringing from day one. Good luck to all, I've seen it happen time and time again. Why are we pilots so gullible?

There were several ex-TWA guys flying up there that didn't have to pay to fly. They were hired on a 6-month contract basis to get the airline up to speed and a few extended to stay on.

The PFT aspect was for Canadian citizens who got hired as FO's.

Bummer. TC
