Forget about whether there is wind or not. How about making it a representative of what our real pax load looks like? Several old folks, a bunch of 300 pounders (men and women), a dozen drunks and some non-english speakers. Oh yeah, and some teenagers with their baggy pants around their knees!

I'd guess closer to 90 minutes!
I have several 727 skydives out of the Amerijet cargo plane they bring to the World Freefall Convention.

Think about it. We get loaded in six sticks of 30 for a total of 180 and they only let three sticks out the back door in one pass. That pass has to be more than 90 seconds long and we were wearing parachutes with a focused plan to exit the plane in a hurry. And we were all standing up at the time we were ordered to get moving.

How the heck are they going to get a bunch of confused whuffo's to exit a plane in 90 seconds from half the exit doors?

They send the original group away and call in another fresh group to try again. The second group will then be subjected to the same environment for the evac.

Both groups will be young, healthy, and wearing track shoes.
Hahaha, I have friends that BASE jump off of 300 foot microwave towers at night and 250 high cliffs. Maybe they should run a 'lift' for the people on the second deck to the top of the tail and let em BASE jump off. That would be a new one.

Is 90 seconds the standard across the board, or does it depend on aircraft size? If it's 90 seconds to evacuate an RJ or a 747, then airbus has a legitimate reason to call BS.

It's 90 seconds across the board for ALL a/c with only 50% of the exits available to use.

Also, I thought it was mandatory to have an even cross section of the public....from young to old, slim to fat, etc to get a true indication.

And last but not least...when the aircraft manufactuers do these tests I thought they offered cash for participants....for example, 1st person over 50 wins xxx amount of cash, 1st female, etc, etc

I believe thats the way they get them out so quickly....especially when its common for people to be breaking arms, legs, etc on past tests.

Like every disaster, some wingnut statistician will figure what percentage survival rate will be "acceptable."

Personally, I could care less if I were ever a passenger on this beast. Isn't it bad enough being in the middle of six abreast on a 74 with stinky on your left, sweaty on your right and the puker behind you??? No thanks! (oh yeah, I forgot 300 of your deckmates all making cell phone calls at the same time!)

Maybe Boeing wasn't so dumb going the 787 route??

I doubt this little "test" will stop the A380 from being deployed in the USA. Large corporations and foreign governments have ways to "grease the wheels of progress". . . .

Just look at how much "progress" the Chinese made with the Clinton administration. . .

I like this quote from the article:

"Qantas has ordered 12 of the giant planes, each of which is capable of carrying 555 passengers in comfort on long haul flights."

Kind of like an RJ carries 70 people in comfort. Right.
