dumbpilot: it can be incredibly annoying to see something flash in the corner of your eyes. Maybe as therapy you should give him your headset for a few hours and see how you like it.
It bothers him. So turn the thing around or put something over that light. A whole lot easier to keep a good atmosphere in a cockpit than telling someone to f*ck-off (or get therapy as you call it).

As far as marrying the heading bug, we do it too on the -10. Simple reason: when the HSI is selected to show INS (or GPS) info the heading bug will not show your selected heading. So when you are instructed to fly 10 degrees left or right you first need to see what heading you are on, then add or subtract 10 and then turn that in the heading selector before you pull it. In heading select or hold the heading bug will indicate selected heading. If the heading selector matches the heading you are flying it is a lot quicker to change it 10 degrees than when they differ a lot. You can actually pull the heading select and immidiately initiate the turn when starting to turn the heading slect knob for the new heading, instead of first calculating the new heading, set it and then pull heading select. Worst case scenario will be a 4-5 second delay
