Personally, I used to spend ten months on the road, just did three and a half, and slowing down a little now. There's no sin in work.

No offense but this commentary makes me feel like an idiot for trying to pursue this career.

I quess you americans who can pass a ATP written exam in two hours (FAA standards) after memorizing the anwers to questions, and who instrument ratings and pilot licenses never expire would expect to get incompentent and dangerous pilots flying for scum bag employers like Connie Kalitta.

I did my ATP when the FAA still scrutinized logbooks and investigated them before issuing the authorization to even take the written test. That took three hours to start. I had been flying ten years when I made application to take my ATP. That icluded everything fromstandard instrument flying to agricultural work...I didn't accept then, nor now incompetence in the cockpit. Most employers don't either. (I can't say all, because I've known a few that do...). Flame bait, I presume?

I've met a few European ATPs who don't know why their HSIs precess when they're flying through ice clouds.

And apparently one ATP from the good old US of A who's just as ignorant. I'll bite. Why does an HSI precess when flying through ice clouds? I've never seen it on a mechanical or electrical HSI or EHSI, or with a mechanical gyro, or any intertial or digital system. Perhaps I'm European and don't even know it. Always willing to learn more.

Being a relative "newbie" myself, I thought I had missed something here. I am also curious about the answer. 'I R a pirate, me sutipd.'
 
Something Worth Noting

I noticed that this thread deals with a 20 year FO at Kalitta making $86/hr. Has anyone actually stopped and wondered if Kalitta will even be around in 20 years? Connie seems to shut down and start back up quite a bit, and although I believe Kalitta will still be around in 20 years, I doubt it will be this one.

Look at it like this: Kalitta is like a virus with many strains. It is around for a few years, and then goes dormant when the FAA or finances (vaccine or antibiotic) dictate that he shuts down. Eventually, it shows up again as a different strain. Hiring begins, 747's show up with the Kalitta titles on it, the pay is now $30/hr for a captain, $25/hr for a PFE, $15/hr for an FO, and $10/hr for an FE. Everyone is happy to interview with them and suddenly they are the place to be. Then, the natives get restless, a union is organized, rumor is that top captain's pay is $70/hr, and people who don't work there want to because they get to see the world 25 days each month from the mighty 747 and those who do work there can't stand it. A few years pass, Kalitta lays everyone off, parks the airplanes, and the cycle begins again.

Oh, and PilotYip is talking about how great a career this is, how you can make $100K/yr, and that a big hiring boom is right around the corner because of the numbers in the year or something stupid like that.

They fly into an "ice cloud" and reach up to turn on the anti ice, but inadvertantly turn off the ac and dc generators. The aircraft goes to essential power and the AHARS revert to basic mode which makes the HSI act like a DG.

DUH!!! This is basic Private Pilot oral stuff.

Yeah ... come to think of it, I had that one on my PPL oral. I aced it, of course, cuz I'm a veritable well-spring of aviation knowledge.

Now if someone would just explain this hi pressure = less density/low pressure = more density thing, then I'd be set.

To be a 20 year FO at Kalitta, you would have to be a PFE upgrading to the right seat or an FO who has chosen not to bid Captain, failed to make it through Captain school, or otherwise designated as non-upgradable (unable to obtain 1st class medical, for example).

The next captain class has 12-18 month since hire date FOs. The company is growing, debt-free, and solid. The systems ground school is outstanding.

I'm still new, having just completed FO OE, but the pilots I've flown with are pros and as good or better as you're going to find anywhere. The job can be demanding, with long days and such, but from what I've seen, I'm happy to be here. I'm no Pollyanna, either.

One last point. I'm more of a leather jacket, no hat type, and that mentality seems to fit in very well. I won't be driving a Ferrari, but I'll make a pretty good living. I've learned over a long career that nothing is certain in the long run, and it's always good to be working somewhere.

I used a bad example in my previous post. Also, my comments are made from experience flying light piston twins and turboprops, so I admit to making a jacka$$ of myself. The thing with the HSI isn't bogus, however.

If you can't dissipate static electricity properly, you screw up your flux detectors. Since we rarely had good static wicks, this used to happen to us quite a bit. You'd watch St. Elmo's fire build up, when it'd dissipate, your HSI would indicate a 10-20 degree change in heading. "Ice clouds" refers to flying through snow, ice crystals, whatever.
