For all you jerks who think Capt. Taylor is a hero here's what I wish for you:

You all marry a hot, sexy F/A who likes to socialize on her layovers. Then you can wonder what low life pilot is trying to scam his way into her panties. Because, face it, BOYS...there are a whole bunch of guys out on the line who are better looking, more athletic and better in the sack than YOU are.

Then, of course, there are the nimrods who will tell her, "I bet you're a FREAK in the bed, Honey."

Perhaps you can sleep well at night knowing the JTs in the world are working overtime to bed your sweetheart.

That's life my friend. Somewhere somebody other than you wants to have sex with your wife. It matters not if you're a pilot that's gone a couple nights a week or a banker who is home every night.

How you, your wife and your marriage deals with that is another story.

Gup

The less it costs the more people will buy. Simple economics. That has obviously happened to the airlines causing a lot of growth. To sit back and look at things realistically, the airlines are doing pretty well in a bad economy due to the low prices. While I would certainly like a bigger paycheck, the reality is the pre-deregulation prices were so high that it kept the number of people flying down. The same thing is happening with hotels and rental cars. Everyone shops on the net for the cheapest prices and then get hit with resort fees or other fees to generate revenue. Good or bad its the way things are in today's world.

While I would certainly like a bigger paycheck, the reality is...

... Pilots forgot they were labor and stopped supporting unions ... And forgot that power can be achieved AND abused, and we need a mechanism to fight that.

I don't disagree with your simpleness, but believe there is much more at play with all our checks than that. Or else please explain the enormous increase in executive pay over the same time period. Or do simple economics not apply to them?

A: computers. Cell phones. TVs. All better and much cheaper now.
Said the devil's advocate.

What??? 20 years ago the best cell phones cost a penny with a 1 year contract. Now they're $200 with a 2 year contract, maybe less if you get a crappy phone, but still a 2 year contract.

Flat screens may have come down in price, but they're still much more expensive than TV's were 20 years ago. $500 used to be an expensive TV. Now $1000 is normal for a cheap TV. Over $2000 if you want a fancy one.

Computers haven't changed much in price either, but you get much more performance for your money.

We negotiate and vote on our own paycheck and work rules through the union. I voted against the last contract due to what I thought was insufficient pay raises and poor vacation credit among other things. The majority voted it in along with the union leadership's backing. That's what we control.
The board of directors and shareholders are responsible for the ceo/management packages, if you want to change that, you or actually,we need to influence them.

I agree with your take on executive pay and it is probably more relevant than anything in this discussion, BUT to simply blame unions is too simplistic. The reality is when the airlines were deregulated we all had to compete to survive. SWA is what it is because of it's ability to compete and survive (your pilots flew more for less pay than the competition), UAL/AMR/DAL/USAir/HAL/ALK etc etc took pay cuts to compete and survive. We are all responsible to a certain degree.
The reality is it's just business. But the bottom line remains, air travel is a bargain by any way you want to measure it. It is a tremendous service to the traveling public and people just don't appreciate how much goes into providing the safest most efficient form of transportation available at a very reasonable price.

I disagree, a lot of that stuff by and large is cheaper, because we outsourced the labor while increasing management compensation. But that still doesn't mean airline tickets are not a tremendous bargain in 2011 dollars.

Up until today I thought the reason you were so cranky online was your older sister consistently beat you up and stole your lollypops.

Now we know the real story! :p

Cheers Fubi, and Happy 4th.

I wonder if 150 years ago if the settlers would have complained so much about going from New York to San Fran in 5 hours in a very safe, climate controlled environment for what equates to about a day's worth of their pay?

Versus - their many month journey over rugged terrain in a wagon dodging Indians and dealing with foul weather?
