World Airways no more

I ate dinner with a friend last night who was working there, he said he didn't know day to day if he had a job.

The non skeds have always had an interesting history. Transocean is a great story..... Speaking of ONA, I went to college with the son of one of their legendary pilots. Stinky Davis, he was the Captain of the DC-10 that ingested birds at JFK and they aborted after V1. The airplane was totalled, but everyone got out. They were all (I think about 130) employees heading to go fly a Hadj contract in the middle east. I believe I recall that another time he landed a DC-8 on Ice in the middle of the North pole due to some kind of major component failure.
A lot of great aviators in the non sked ranks and a lot of great stories. Flying all over the world for weeks at a time can be a pain in the ass, but it's a lot more challenging and creates a lot more adventure than domestic flying ever will.
 
Any idea how many pilots this affects ?
 
Good luck to everyone there. Is North American still flying? Wasn't NA owned by the same holding company?


The article I saw indicated Cerebus Capital was the major lien holder on World and refused to offer additional financing. North American is undergoing evaluation by the same beancounters (yes, NA is owned by the same holding company as World).

With the drawdown in the sandbox and the evaporation of government contracts, I fear for North American's future as well. Sad.

I love this PROFESSION but I hate this BUSINESS.
