ATLANTA, Nov. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Delta Air Lines (DAL) plans to add 18 daily nonstop flights to five destinations from Dallas Love Field in October 2014, boosting competition in the market and adding an array of new travel options for North Dallas.

Delta's planned expansion will enhance competition at the airport with new nonstop service to New York-LaGuardia, Los Angeles, Detroit, and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Delta also will add two daily flights to its existing Atlanta service.

Delta will require access to gates at Love Field in order to operate its expanded schedule. Delta has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to allow it to bid on Love Field gates as part of the divestiture of airport assets under a proposed settlement agreement with American Airlines and US Airways.

Currently at Love Field, 16 of the 20 gates and more than 95 percent of available seats are controlled by one airline, Southwest Airlines, which transports more passengers in the U.S. than any other carrier. Love Field has one of the highest concentrations of operations controlled by a single airline among the nation's large airports.

"Our new service at Dallas Love Field means more competition and options for North Texas travelers, and flights to our international hubs will provide convenient connections to international destinations in Asia, Europe, Latin America and Africa," said Bob Cortelyou, Delta's senior vice president ? Network Planning. "Dallas/Fort Worth is a top business market and critical to our strategy of connecting the world's leading cities for business and commerce."

The expanded Love Field service builds on Delta's recent growth at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, where it currently operates 45 peak-day flights to eight destinations. Last year, Delta added new nonstop service between DFW and New York-LaGuardia. It also operates nonstop flights from DFW to Atlanta, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Detroit, Salt Lake City, Cincinnati, Memphis and New York-JFK.

When the expansion is complete, Delta would operate a total of 68 daily flights in the Dallas/Fort Worth region, including flights at both DFW and Love Field.

Delta's expansion will be implemented following changes to the Wright Amendment, which previously restricted Love Field service to Texas, adjacent states and Missouri, Alabama, Kansas and Mississippi. Those restrictions are scheduled to end in October 2014.

Delta employs nearly 1,000 people in the Dallas/Fort Worth region in areas including reservations, customer care, airport operations and customer service.

True. And DL still wouldn't be able to make money on Lubbock. They tried it out of MEM and it was a money loser.

Yeah, but there were only FedEx jumpseaters onboard! LBB to DAL may be a better option! ;)

RJs been doing Love for 10-15 years for ma Delta , many outa the ATL. Probally be done with those super MRJs that Jenny Leigh is so fond of. :D

You have to keep in mind that you fuel your life by advertising an I'm better than you mentality.

There will probably be some RJs involved, but at least some of it will be done with 717s


Not having a go at you, but that's a pretty sad truth isn't it ?

Those mainline flights will be almost indistinguishable from the SWA product in coach. On the RJ, the difference increases to favor the SWA product. For a coach class passenger, the motivation to ride on the Legacy carrier should be the superior product. Unfortunately, I don't see it. The ironic exception is DAL's now superior on time performance.

The motivation to ride on a legacy is also the frequent flyer program. SWA's Rapid Rewards is pretty awful compared to what it was. The miles go a whole lot better places on the legacy, and they're now easier to get.

Justice official William Baer, who headed DOJ?s lawsuit, made it clear Tuesday that the agency wants low-cost carriers to get the airport gates that American and US Airways must divest, as well as takeoff and landing slots that must be sold at LaGuardia and Washington Reagan National Airport.
?We see legacy carriers ? and our complaint issued in August makes this pretty clear ? as part of the problem. We see low-cost carriers as a key part of the solution,? Baer told reporters.
Asked if so-called ?legacy? carriers Delta and United should bother applying, Baer replied: ?That?s up to them. But the [settlement] papers make it pretty clear where we think these gates and slots need to go in order to improve on a competitive dynamic today, which is not as healthy as it could be.?

Not at all surprising to many of us legacy types, the DOJ wants to pick winners in this deal. The fact DLF gates are in the USAir American merger divestures at all is disgusting enough. Add to that the DOJ specifically calls legacies the "problem" and specifically speaks to taking the gates as retaliation is BS. Delta ought to have as much right to those as any other airline.
 
It's ridiculous that in today's airline game, we still don't have a level playing field.

Those "evil" legacy carriers who continue to fly to all the no-money podunks out there for the people.

I would really like to see the special cities and fares once JB and SWA gets their silver platter handed to them.

BK is no fun, and I hope you never go thru it. None of us wanted to go thru it, *willingly*, In other words: it's not like you have to now compete with a bunch of pilots who sponsored their own training, worked for chronically low wages for decades, and flew airplanes for no pension, right?

Frankly, I have a problem with you even using the word "compete". You're not "competing" for anything. You're company is a war and terror profiteer simply waiting to take advantage of the next crisis, the next spoils, or the next Texas airport stunt. How about you use the word "exploit"? That's a bit more fitting for you.
