For the Southwest guys if you had a Bose aviation 10 headset would you use that or go get a quiet comfort 15 with the you fly Mike, which would be better to use on the 737. Thx I already have the Bose 10 but it needs a new mic down cord which will cost $125 so I thought instead of fixing it just going to get the quiet comfort.

Both are good at noise reduction. I have the A20 and I'd say it's probably a little better than that QC2/UFM, and you have the MP3 port with the A20. That being said, we have guys that like the QC2 for two reasons. The first is lower cost, and the second is being able to use it in the back on commutes.

If you don't commute then that really doesn't play a factor. Comes down to personal preference(cost) and needs (commuting/DH).

PS- the A20 is bulky to carry around, but again personal preference.

I had/have all three. Each has it's benefits drawbacks. Hands down A20, it's lighter than X, and much better noise cancelling which is hard to believe. Next in line is Bose X, exceeds the QC in quieting, but heavier than a QC, since I wore a helmet for 20yrs, the Bose X is very light to me.

I'd spend the dough and fix the X. Heck private message me, I may be able to help.

If you already have a QC, that works fine too, although I was not a fan of the mike being so short, always on the left (as a 10-20yr FO an issue...), and was not easy to keep it out of the way, it's not on a hinge, you just move the rubber arm, the X and A20 are hinged for easier movement.

An F/O I flew with let me try his A20 before I bought my QC15. The A20 is quieter than the QC15 but not enough to make me pay the extra money. Plus as a commuter I enjoy sitting in the back with the QC15 on and listening to my MP3.

thanks guys, I plan on being on the 737 for a long while. It would cost me 125 to fix my Bose X and about 450 to go get a QC15 with mic. I don't mind spending the money if the QC is much more comfortable, especially on long flights. When in the back I read and use ear buds for music so the only use I have is on the flight deck. I think both would be fine for noise cancelling but it comes down to " is the QC a big improvement on comfort or not that much". thanks again

Anyone use David Clark's at SW? Don't be jealous or hate but my DC has gel ear seals and a furry headband.

Telex 850 is provided to pilot during new hire training. There is no headsets in airplane except for telex ear spike for backup in sealed bags.

You could try going to the Bose shop and ask them what the upgrade cost would be, I know they change older QC 2 (just headphones) for a new model QC15 at $100. Some models had problems and they will replace out of warranty units with new ones and a lower cost. May be worth the try

Was in the same boat -
Had the 10, needed some work. Will be an Fo, don't commute. Considered fixing up the 10, UFM, then got so many good reviews on the 20 added that in- then I got to use one with Bluetooth for a trip -
Done, sold. $82/month for a year interest free. Own a business and have a young family- that Bluetooth is great for calls while setting up the next flight -and easily the best noise reduction and comfort out of the 3. Cord for music too.
Only drawbacks are it's size and can't use it on DHs.
I sold my 10 for $265- not bad for its age.
UFM - lots love it. Few FOs because of the cord position. In the end the quality just isn't great as it's a rigged up headset- I've heard that lots.
I've never regretted getting the 20 -

last question I promise for the southwest guys, what percent would you say use noise canceling headsets of some sort over just regular telex's....about half? or almost everyone?

Monster,

Probably just under half use the A20 or "some kind of noise cancelling headset" (the Telex is technically noise cancelling, it just isn't very good at it). A handful use the "ear spike" and I'd guess just over half use the Company provided Telex.

Another fan of the A20. Worth every dime.

Someone posted that he liked QC-15 better than A20 because could listen to mp3 while deadheading. Isn't there a plug for A20 to listen to music/movies?

From what I've been told there is a plug for the A20 so you can listen to music. However do you really want to sit in the back with a headset that has a boom mike attached. The U-Fly-Mike allows you to detach the boom mike and just have the headset.

Oh. Gotcha. But sometimes I like to pull out pilot stuff like a hi chart and my old trusty E6B "whiz wheel" to impress my seat mates. Just think of the extra swag with a boom mike? Especially now during heavy migration season with the senior ladies to south Florida ... I'd be killing it!

1/2, but every7 month more and more are buying real noise cancelling technology, not some Walmart inspired headset from Telex.

Are all SWA 737s equipped with the hot microphone ? Does everybody use it, or do you end up having to flip up an earpiece to yell at each other.

Any thoughts, other than the obvious dangers of transmitting your personal theories on workplace coitus over a VHF frequency ..... ?

All of the NGs have a hot intercom switch on the yoke or on the audio panel. The Classics don't right now but there are ways around that.

All of the audio panels fleet wide are being changed out to the one with hot mic capability so they'll all have it soon.
