Gary Kelly won't discuss rumors that Delta will take its Boeing 717s

Southwest Airlines picked up a fleet of 88 Boeing 717s when it acquired AirTran Airways last May. Chairman and chief executive officer Gary Kelly a few months later allowed that the 117-seat 717s didn't fit into Southwest's fleet type and that he'd rather fly only the bigger Boeing 737.

A rumor out of an industry meeting in Phoenix has Delta Air Lines as an interested acquirer of the AirTran aircraft. So we took the opportunity to ask Kelly during a media scrum Wednesday after Southwest's celebration of its first Boeing 737-800:

Us: Are you close to deal to send the Boeing 717s to Delta?

Kelly: "It's a rumor, so I don't comment on rumors."

Us: How about speculation?

Kelly: "I can't speculate, either."

Us: When do you think you might have closure on that rumor?

Kelly: "I can't comment. What I would say is that 717 is a fine airplane. We would be better suited with all 737s. If anything, we think our future is with bigger airplanes, not smaller. There's no secret that we're looking for a way to accelerate the retirement of the 717s out of our fleet. But in any event, we're going to operate the 717s for years. Otherwise, I'm aware of the rumors and I can't comment."

Last week at an investment conference, Delta president Ed Bastian carefully answered a question about Delta's possible interest in the AirTran 717s.

"We are looking at all arrangements, and we've taken note that Southwest has indicated a desire to exit the fleet," Bastian said at the J.P. Morgan conference. "I can't tell you whether that's going to be a decision Delta can take or not."

As far as OYS goes, don't we all have her blocked anyway?

That's great. But, why should a thread be erased if I do contribute articles when I find them? 6000 people viewed the thread. And there were TWO threads that were erased.

Keep making this about yourself, OYS, and not the topic of the thread title, and they'll have to shut this one down too.

717s possibly coming to DELTA is all about me? ASADFW7 likes to censor anything that MIGHT be a negative for SWA, even though I never stated that. He closed two threads, and all I did on the first one was post this same article. Then it was closed. I posted it again in a continuation thread, and after 7 posts that one was erased too. NO TOS infractions at all.

I reopenned the thread and merged all three back together, please continue the discussion with less personal back and forth against OYS. Thank you

I think that you viewed the thread 6000 times :)

Maybe it's important to me and many other junior people on both sides? Is that ok? That doesn't mean two threads should be erased. But, now they are merged and back, which is better.

What's the hire date of the junior captain at DL?

I think the junior captain is in 99 or 2000? But, from what I am hearing from a little birdy, if this happens at all, your 717s wouldn't be coming until they come off lease, and then replaced 1 for 1 with your new 737s. If true, that would be good for both sides.

How would the 717's going away be a negative to SWA? Hell that would be considered a coup by not only the investors but by most SWA pilots.

That is what I have been saying. SWA wants a single fleet type, and DL wants to replace the DC9s. There you go.

Actually, I'd prefer you go ahead and delete it. All it says is, "This message is hidden because On Your Six is on your ignore list." over and over again. Not making it about her, but, uh, it's true.

No doubt there is something out there. Or else GK would not resort to a no comment statement. I am dissapointed in OYS though. The former champion of all SLI's fair and square seems to be singing a different tune all of a sudden. I could be wrong.

Why am I singing a different tune? Should I welcome a group when it isn't likely to happen? From what I have heard, that shouldn't even be an option. If they announced tomorrow that all 88 planes would show up on DL property, then I would probably say arbitration is the way to go. I would think that would be most fair. Satisfied? Btw, does Herb Kelleher do speeches by the hour? Can a group RENT him for an hour?

Yes. Even in the hypothetical. Or you are no different than those you called out for the last 10 months. By the way; I don't care what happens. I just find it odd that you are beating this drum so hard, given your strong opinions about the AT/SWA SLI.

Being near the bottom, I would like to see some seniority movement sooner than later. We do have a bunch of retirements coming up, but new planes would be nice too. I am looking forward to any rumors or announcements. What's wrong with that? What does that have to do with my stance on SLI's? How would the AT guys come over to DL when you guys have already merged your lists? How would that work, anyway? (even in the hypothetical) Are there any SWA guys at the bottom of the list, or just all AT?

No AT guy becomes a SWA guy until they report to Dallas for training. A lot can and will happen between now and then.

That could be 4-5 years away for some. Do you believe that some won't make it? What are our other options?

Sorry, but if that is true, that is ridiculous. From what I am hearing any possible deal would occur as the leases naturally expire. So, as long as that is true, you would be fine. You are also getting a lot of new planes in the meantime. Some of the SWA pilots on this board are upset that the new planes coming in aren't growth airplanes if the 717s depart and are replaced, along with the older 737-300/500s. They are just angry. Don't let it get to you.

Sure, why not. You may find yourself living in a shotgun shack. You may find yourself to be a bottom to someone else's top. You may find yourself (RSW right?) to be junior to a former 89th AW bubba and former AT shmuck 717 driver. Guess what? Whether you're getting gangbanged in Leavenworth or sitting right seat to a former trannie that flew the prez or the SST, you're no better or worse a person for your life experiences and accomplishments. So lose the effing chip mate.

Man you had a rough life. What led you to Leavenworth?

Very professional of you, my little UPT boy. Grow up and pay your fellow and future coworkers some respect. I know this is your first airline and all but Really - do you have to act like that?
