Did anyone see the USA TODAY article and graph today that showed how the majority of the flights at these two MAJOR airports are flown by regional jets!!!

Wow!! I wonder how whatever LEGACY that was allowed that to happen!!

By Regional jets do you mean "mainline replacement jets?"

I've got nothing against RJ's taking mainline routes - as long as they are flown by the likes' of Delta, United and American.

That ******************** doesn't fly at Southwest Airlines.

It used to be worse, but is actually getting better at both hubs. Look at Comair for example, which will be down to 44 total planes by next year. ASA has had to take planes out of ATL and put them to use for United at both ORD and IAD. All good news. But one thing that is good about the remainder of the feed is it helps keep you guys from expanding at those hubs too. No extra gates for you, unless you try to merge with the competition for big bucks and much "culture" disruption. What's the result? You get to be USair II with a couple more gates at the way out Humphries terminal in MSP, and you get to be a distant number two with about 1 terminal worth of gates at the World's busiest airport. Overall, you get strife and few short approaches. You lose.

Aren't you code sharing with AT until SOC? They are cheaper thanks to your culture busting 2nd offer, and they are the ones that seem to know how to fly to those international destinations. Good luck with USair II.

We are all in this business together, yet a significant percentage of us is somehow thinking throwing stones somehow makes them better?
To be clear, SWA is the airline that decided their International expansion would have to be done with Mexican flight crews south of the border and Canadian flight crews north of the border, all in 737's. Delta has a huge International presence that is fed by a very large domestic operation including mainline and yes a lot of RJ's crewed by equally competent pilots that also are making a living flying domestically.
I'm sure there is a pretty good chance that someday SWA will someday expand out of regional type flying (like AirTran did, I'm sure merging with them will help you ) but obviously you will never have have the kind of international presence that DAL does.
DAL is a very different operation than SWA, can't understand why you guys feel the need to compare yourselves to them? Be happy with what you got, in this business everything's changes.

SWA becomes the first corporation in history not to experience change.
Simple fact is SWA no longer has the cost advantage it once had ( lower salaries than it's peers, paying less for fuel, and less head to head competition with higher cost airlines). You do have the one of the best corporate cultures in the industry.
With the AirTran aquisistion the culture will even change, a conscious change accepted by "Gary" because it was the only way to expand in ATL. You have to wonder what other changes will happen?

BTW, please don't lump me in with OYS and Fubi, those guys have gone over the top.

Or did you mean an International presence like DAL? Not possible for SWA because of the politics to get International routes, slot restrictions and the fact that SWA would have to completely reinvent itself to attract a significant amount of the international traveler. Right now SWA would be in the PeopleExpress (I worked there once!) or Laker Ballpark. It's a huge leap beyond that and would require buying UAL or DAL, something that is not an option for SWA, unless they want to become a large ALPA carrier!

bitching about the regionals?! I am only playing the game that the majors invented (whether directly or indirectly by the pilots). More then anything I would love to be at a major, so I wouldn't have to climb one ladder and start all over at the next one and the next and the next and the next, etc, etc, etc. This is the only industry in the world that when you switch jobs, you start at the bottom with a HUGE pay cut. I could be a McDonalds manager and make 40K while switching to Burger King and make the same or close to.

And no, I don't wanna go become a manager at a restaurant/fast food joint, before anybody wants to twist my words around. Just giving an example.

I hope you didn't see bitching about the regionals in anything I said. The RJ pilot's are doing just as good a job as anyone else in this business. We are all paying the price for the greed, competitiveness and "warrior spirit" that has infected our profession. You guys are just doing the flying the Piedmont/Ozark/PSA/North Central/Frontier etc etc. use to do.
