Emirates Pay

Could someone explain how Emirates pay works? I have read the website and the forums and I am trying to compare it US based carriers. Is there a way to do that?

1) There is base pay which is published on the EK career website
2) Then there is hourly flying pay. Basically just multiply that by 900 then divide by 12 to get a monthly average.
3) Then add another 12% to the base pay for the provident fund contribution ( only get that if you stay for more than 7 years though ).
4) There can be an annual bonus, but it's not guaranteed. In my time at EK it has ranged from 0 to 14 weeks of base pay. Going forward I expect it will average 2-4 weeks of base pay.

The big difference versus a U.S. carrier is that this pay has a foreign earned income exclusion. For First Officers it means your pay is tax free. Captains pay tax since they make over the amount of the exclusion, but effectively the tax rate is only 10-20%.

First year F.O. pay is easily equivalent to a $100,000/year job in the States, after taxes.

Most people tend to leave out the housing allowance when it comes to pay. It's a significant amount of money. If you take the company provided villa then you should still consider the value of free housing when determining pay.

I'm a 4 year FO flying the 777. My average paycheck is 27,500 dirhams a month. That comes out to $7493 dollars take home a month. I also live out of accomodation. I get 160,000 dirhams a year for that. 160,000 divided by 12 is 13,333 which is $3632 per month. Add the two together it come out to 11,125 take home a month. That does not include any bonus (if we were to get one), per diem money for the overnights, the deduction of 5 percent contribution to retirement, the 12 percent of my salary amount that Emirates puts into retirement. It's not first year pay but hope that helps. The only difference between my pay and first year pay would be you average paycheck per month. Housing allowance is the same regardless of what year you are. I would think would make around 25,000 dirhams a month as a first year FO after everything they take out.

What do you mean after everything they take out? Isn't the salary tax free? How do you get jacked on the paycheck then? I have ineffective socialist deductions from my paycheck every time (social security and medicare). I thought that stuff doesn't exist in the UAE?

he was probably referring to the 5% per month they take out of your pay to put in your retirement plan. The company puts in an additional 12% for a total of 17% per month into your provident fund. Also most pilots join the Emirates Pilots Club which gives you discounts on anything from beer to hotel stays. That costs 75AED per month and is deducted directly from your paycheck. Another potential deduction would be the optional long term disability insurance plan.

You are right Green. Along with what you mentioned staff travel flights are also deducted from your paycheck and I'm married so I pay 210 dirhams ($58 Us Dollars) a month for my wife's medical insurance.

Finished my first year in July. Took home $102,168. That did include bonus which is not guaranteed. Also included 4 months of training pay which means no flight pay. Not bad considering housing, utilities and med/dental are paid for. Your only expenses are phone/TV/internet and whatever car you buy. Oh, and how much partying ($10.00 beers) and skirt chasing you do.
The real question is whether or not you can tolerate Dubai.

Never? That limits your option in DXB. The only other place with 20 AED beers I can think of are the softball fields by the Metropolitan.

Correct me if Im wrong but $100,000 take home and having your housing paid for leaves an FO job at Emirates much higher paying than any US airline. When you think of the value of housing taking that expense out of your monthly budget will leave most families with a lot of surplus cash.

What is the monthly take home of a FO that takes the housing allowance instead of the provided accommodations?
