Take it literally much?
Your mouth waters when you see those red trips, doesn't it?
The problem is that suggesting things like that DO get taken seriously by a few, and SOME feel that way, and only need a little push to do stupid crap. Keep it professional, even on here.
And no, I won't be picking up any time, but not because of any ideological reason. I'm not philosophically opposed to it, and I don't begrudge anyone who does pick up extra time. You people are too concerned with everyone else. Worry about yourself, and mind your own business.
If flights get cancelled due to lack of crews, it will keep people furloughed longer when we don't grow, so go ahead, be stupid and recommend that people not cover open time. Cut off your nose to spite your face. Brilliant.
If we were adequately staffed and not busy pinching pennies we would all be a little happier. How your brain doesn't grasp this is beyond me.
I get that. This is a different issue. The fact is that there is open time out there, and if someone needs or wants to pick it up, that is their business, not yours. If you want to improve the QOL for the reserves, you should be pulling for people to pick up the open time. Not picking it up will NOT get the other furloughs back, but it sure will keep the reserves humping for the summer!
No doubt, the QOL would be better if we ran a little fatter. I think they are running us so lean to keep our costs down until the rate reset this fall, but that is pure speculation. Maybe things will improve after that? Who knows?
If we were adequately staffed and not busy pinching pennies we would all be a little happier. How your brain doesn't grasp this is beyond me.
Find me the official UPS communication that tells guys not to pick up open time. And if you do find one, look for the NMB's response of telling them to knock it off.

EB Publishes Solidarity Policy on Open Time and Junior Available (JA):
The Executive Board has determined that, until further notice, the following policy is in effect:
* Any IPA crewmember who has received a furlough notice is exempt from this policy
1) Do not pick up Open Time except as outlined below;
2) Do not increase original credit line values by more than five (5:00) credit hours using line improvement, trip trades, and pick up of open time to restore SIK or MIL
3) Do not participate in vacation buy-backs
4) Do not voluntarily train on days off
5) Do not bid for vacation on days off
6) Do not bid for trips that carry-in to days off, including preferencing reserve assignments that carry into days off
7) Do not accept Junior Available assignments.
* - Captains on scheduled reserve days should accept JA2 assignments to the right seat.
Article 13.k.9 said:It shall be a violation of this Agreement if the Association
engages in any action to encourage or suggest to its members
that they not pick up open time or decline junior available
assignments. This language shall not be applicable during a
time of furlough or furlough announcement. Further, it shall be
a violation of this Agreement if any crewmember(s) takes any
action, individually or collectively, to discourage or interfere
with other crewmembers who desire to pick up open time or
accept junior available assignments. Nothing in the preceding
sentence shall limit an individual crewmember’s ability to voice
personal opinions.
I suspect you are right, and it is in EVERYONE's best interest to "win" more flying. To all you die in the wool union chest thumpers, maybe you should turn some of that energy towards the union that allows and encourages us to compete with each other for new flying....That is the game we are playing....If you don't like the game, then change the game....Don't cry in the corner and refuse to play the game because you don't like the rules.
I believe it's actually written into their contract. It's not an email or anything like that.
Personally, I'd rather someone pickup the flying that wants to do it at 150% rather than someone who doesn't want it and missing their commute home or having their own time adversely affected in other ways.

Personally, I'd rather some of the furloghees be recalled. You think their life may be adversely affected?
We need to act like a real airline and start slashing the tires of those who pick these trips up.
