UPS Airlines will furlough 54 pilots Sunday and may cut around 250 additional pilots by year end, according to both the company and the Independent Pilots Assn. representing the cargo carrier's 2,800 pilots.

UPS said in February that it would begin furloughing "at least" 300 pilots in phases beginning this month unless it could "find a solution with the pilots' union that would avert or mitigate the layoffs before they take effect" (ATWOnline, Feb. 9).

Last year, the company and IPA reached agreement on "a variety of voluntary steps" to cut $90 million in costs, in exchange for a promise from management that there would be no furloughs through April 1 of this year.

But UPS said this week that lower demand, a more modern fleet requiring fewer pilots and raising of the pilot retirement age from 60 to 65 in December 2007 necessitates its first-ever pilot furloughs.

"At a time when the number one issue for most Americans is creating jobs, UPS is creating unemployment," IPA President Robert Thrush said. "What makes this furlough truly unfortunate is that our pilots took it upon themselves to give up pay and benefits to produce…guaranteed savings for UPS, enough to keep these 300 pilots employed well into 2011."

He charged that management earlier this year "mockingly [held] out hope that the furloughs may be mitigated, averted or eliminated" so that it could "shamefully attempt to place blame on the pilots for somehow failing to act."

Hey at least they were honest about the age 60 to 65 part.

This sucks for my friends and former co-workers, good luck guys.

IPA Executive Board Hotline

This Sunday, for the first time in our history we will have members of the IPA on furlough.

The only act that cuts deeper for a Union member would be an unjust termination. The difference in this case being that a large number of our members are affected rather than just one.

A pilot is hired to work for UPS to provide a service and be compensated for that work. Employees structure their life around their employment here at UPS and do so with the understanding and faith that UPS will respect them and treat them fairly.

As professional pilots we place a high value on honor and trust. It is an absolute requirement for a safe operating aviation system. We have to trust that the mechanic has fixed the airplane correctly. We have to trust that the fueler has fueled the aircraft correctly. We have to trust the load crew has loaded the aircraft correctly. This well-oiled machine can be jeopardized if the corporation that is responsible for managing this system loses our trust.

UPS insists on calling this devastation for our members and their families a “business decision.” We disagree. You do not treat your family, your employees, in this manner. Whether UPS wants to admit it or not, this “business decision” to furlough members will have long-term consequences. Especially when there were viable alternatives that would have prevented any need for the furlough of a single IPA member.

The IPA is not interested in being a participant in the misguided plans of certain UPS managers who hope to leverage this furlough for gain. Career growth and advancement on the backs of hardworking employees is reprehensible.

This Sunday we will continue to perform our jobs in the same professional manner we have for over 20 years. If you happen to see all of the FQS scattered around the system this next week waiting for nothing to happen, offer then a smile, a handshake and a word of encouragement that with a few more signed cards we will all be better off than we are today.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our furloughed members and their families. You are NEVER forgotten.

Sorry this is happening to you guys. Best wishes from fellow furlough fodder.

UPS guys should be kicking every over 60 guy squarely in the jimmies for this.

True that-

But they are breaking in to guys rooms to have them fly trips that are uncovered? Wow!

explanation? ??

Age 65 even misses the mark....The pilots at UPS really don't need to be fighting themselves right now- how many millions did UPS make last year? Sorry- but furloughs at a company that profitable is incredible.

You can thank the southwest pilots for kicking off the support of age 65!

Well, yes and no. True our union pushed hard for it, but in the big scheme of things SWAPA is not nearly the power on the hill they think they are. Everyone patting PE on the back and calling him "Saint Paul" when his efforts were largely useless. Pathetic.

I just hope SWAPA fights as hard for the FO's has they did for the senior guys.

2009 profit of 2.2 Billion........with a B!
A sad day.

Sorry to all of you getting furloughed. Did UPS give any recall forecast? Good luck! Being furloughed sucks! Welcome to a bit of Hell on Earth. :uzi:

Just like we can all thank Delta for caving on weak ass SCOPE in exchange for pay and pension in that industry leading contract 2000. Now that can has been opened for good. Way to go!

Funny how that top pay and pension went away but scope got even worse. I'm sure all those ASA and Comair guys who rode the wave thank you though. I'm sure those 1,000 or so furloughed mainline guys don't.

RJs and codeshare has cost far more mainline jobs than age 65 dude. Thank yourself for that.

I think UPS and NetJets might be sister companies. "Voluntary concessions. OK, nice work guys, no furloughs". (Fast forward a few months) "Remember that no furloughs stuff? Yeah... Sorry about that......".

Well said!
Except for the part where rj pilots rode the wave as if a majority were at all happy about it. They all have their 10% lifers- but the vast majority of rj drivers want to be mainline pilots for the job security- most are full aware there is NO security and NO leverage in the rj world- it was a sell out for all except the very senior who got the equivalent of a promise and a biscuit in return for it.

Legacy= sellout
DAL has been the worst- there seems to be new blood that has been educating the clueless- so I'll hope they do- and support efforts to get branded flying on one list- seniority just doesn't work all split up like that

You're welcome for that industry leading contract, however, thanks to scum sucking contracts like swa we were forced under bankruptcy protection to work more hours for less pay like the pilots at swa!

And who has people on furlough now? Who's in the hiring mode now?
More rj's being parked and growth flying at mainline. Hey, speaking of furlough, looks like swa will be in shrink mode in the fall, what are your plans for furlough?

RJs and codeshare has cost far more mainline jobs than age 65 dude. Thank yourself for that.
Really, how's that upgrade looking for you at swa now? 18, 19 years?
Thanks to swapa for being the catalyst. Looks like when you're furloughed you can count on that same kind of super seniority treatment from your very senior pilots. Good luck.

Wait, are you really talking about time to upgrade for SW? Don't you have nearly 13000 pilots? How long do you think it will take a newhire there to reach CN? Very funny....

What is the date of hirer for the pilots being effected?
Sorry to all you guys. I would not wish this on my worst enemy

This is approximate: (300 total furloughs planned)

The first 170 to be furloughed are 2007 hires. They will be furloughed from may -nov 2010. The first 54 (of the 170) were furloughed yesterday (may 23)

The next 130 to be furloughed are 2006 hires. They are scheduled to be furloughed in the first few months of 2011.

The last class of new hires was Nov 2007.

Scope,

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you guys went into bankruptcy do to piss poor management. Had absolutely nothing to do with Southwest. Get real.

Thanks for over 750 RJ's under the Delta banner.

RF

I know of guys that went to UPS thinking they were safe at a cargo company. What a shame.

... guess we can blame age 65, scope relief, bankruptcy courts, low cost airlines, stupid consumers, and deregulation.

Ah, yes, the blame game. Notice how some pilots are so quick to blame other airlines for every bad thing? We're not longshoremen and we'll never have that kind of unity because we fly for competing airlines. (And the One Seniority List concept is a pipe-dream.)

But most importantly your list above missed two: the economy and the Railway Labor Act. When times are good little else seems to matter. And with the power the RLA gives management our bargaining power will always be weak.

Until the oft-predicted pilot shortage finally arrives five to ten years from now little will improve for us.

And your PFT (Pay for Training) hasn't hurt the industry? You also don't have a pension, even though your company could afford it (didn't lose it in BK). Come down off of your high horse you loser, and go back to your 5 leg day through Texas. (BORING)
