CAL LAX Base Rumor, AGAIN!

I think the CLE xjet crews are to staff the UAX flying as XJT mgmt has not yet decided to open a new base. Apparently that would trigger a larger staffing need (more recalls/upgrades) due to the contracually required reserve coverage that a new base would call for.
XJT announced new base in ORD after close of business yesterday I believe.

I don't believe this is legal per our contract. We are not required to sit reserve anywhere except our base.
Reserves can be asked to sit reserve in another base per 25.11.K.

But since LAX is not a "base" they may have to ask the union for a side letter of some kind to allow it. More likely they'll just do it and then make the union grieve it. By the time they figure it out LAX will either be a base outright or they will have pulled out of the LAX market.

Right, they can be ASKED but they by no means have to do it. Therefore the fly now grieve later won't really come into play. Of course there will be plenty of people out there who will help out the company and do so, so its a moot point. And if the union goes for a side letter during CBA negotiations? TOTAL RECALL and boot ALPO the hell off the property.

There are a lot of ways they can work around this. Assign DH and a notional pairing which then doesn't materialize and then they are in position somewhere else.
Of course there will be plenty of people out there who will help out the company and do so, so its a moot point.
Indeed. There are a lot of moot points at CAL.
 
Having pilots who "help out" is one thing..
It's another to plan an operation where you need crews (Captains & FO's) to cover flying.

As far as making pairings that don't exist... I would expect the Union to be on top of that.

When this 73 CLE to Hawaii via the West Coast starts, expect to see major problems and bandaid fixes until someone in management decides to actual MANAGE and start a base out there.

Going to be a great summer..
And with the expected addition of a 777 to Japan in the Fall, and 787's in next years bid, I expect to see another bid out sometime before summer..
Once the actual COLA numbers come back and a few more retirements/medicals... it's gonna be bid time again~

There seems to be no end to the puzzled response by the union when over and over again CAL does stuff that wasn't imagined. But over and over again CAL seems to muddle through it first by simply ignoring the contract, and second when so many pilots come to their aid.

In spite of what is right or logical, this pattern repeats on a continuous loop. It'll happen again this time. Pilots will complain but in the end enough will step up to waive contractual rights, look for shortcuts, and fill in the gap to make it work.

This is what Wall Street means by "good labor relations at Continental." It has nothing to do with whether there is good morale. It has to do with whether the job gets done. It does--and that's all that matters from an MBA perspective.

Sad but true. I doubt there will be a single cancellation from lack of crews this summer. They won't recall or hire until that starts happening.
