All you ASA folks will be likely longing for ATL after about a week of the goat rope that is UAX IAD.

Here are a few highlights:

-Find a printer game. You'll need to print your own releases, and quite often only 1 or 2 printers work in the A gate area. If you're on the C/D concourse, its even worse. I've always had good luck grabbing a sandwich at Subway then using one of the gate printers near there. Which leads me to...

- Playing gate agent. Because no matter how OBVIOUS it is you are a pilot, foreigners (mostly) will still repeatedly walk up to you and ask about their connection to their faraway land. And by ask I mean pointing at a ticket and shrugging shoulders.

- Mobile lounging. Gotta do a plane and concourse swap? Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. At least they are cool in the summer.

- Deferred APU? May God grant you the patience of Job. At least your CRJ's are AC power and can use the handful of GPUs that don't have red tags. Us ERJ/Saab folks need the converter box...

- English. Its gotten better with Air Wisky, but you'll still need to decipher that "People walk" actually means "Paperwork", and not in fact an actual jetway/ramp.

- Ops Radio. Not staffed by Americans. Usually ok, but if you have anything non-standard they just have no clue. They listen for only key words like any poor language speaker. I made the mistake of asking for paramedics over Ops radio one day due to an unconcious pax at the gate, I had to repeat myself at least 5 times before they understood. Never again, just use ground.

-Lav Service. Similar to ATL, the cart is always broken.

- BW3 wetnaps. That right, occasionally "catering" distributes Buffalo Wild Wings wetnaps to United RJ flights for United pax.

- Ramp numbering system that it f'n retarded. Spot 79? Spot 83? Spot 72? I've been flying in and out of there for 5 years and I still don't have any idea how they came up with those other than "numbers from a hat".

- Expect the usual wait for rampers, tugs, push crews, and load report, crew blame for delays, long lines for the handful of food places, and crowded terminals just like anywhere. Oh, and watch the cliffs...er...covered steps from jetway to ramp on the C/D concourse. You'll see what I mean soon enough, I'm still fearful of the day grandma or gramps breaks a hip falling down those things.

god forbid........a pilot help a passenger.........the nerve of those darn pax asking a pilot a question about a connection.....

One or 2 pax is fine. But when they start lining up at the podium because the gate agents have not been seen for an hour, its an operational problem.

Yeah; I gotta say it sounds the same as ATL except the language is different. often times I end up getting the release off the printer myself and we have just as many lost passengers here and everywhere else I end up. The BW3 wetnaps sounds better than the ones we get here at ASA sometimes. Why are they giving out alcohol wipes like you get before you get a shot? It's a little square.

I've got to disagree. Maybe a couple years ago yes, but recently things have gotten much much much better, especially on C concourse. Jetways at every gate, ground power (and sometimes air) at every jetway, no mobile lounges on concourses A,B,C, or D, operations that does understand english, every printer works, and lav service that is lightyears better than it was a year ago. I'll give you the wet-nap issue, though (WT_?) I definitely think I would rather deal with the ATL.

Will ASA management provide us Roseta Stones for Swahili and other exotic Indo-Chinese languages? I heard that this was in the works and will be distributed accordingly.

Ok now lets look at the advantages of ATL:

- Daily ground stops
- Routinely missing flights home / to work due to wheels up and EDCs
- Attitude from gate agents (Worst I have ever been treated by any airline in any airport)
- Concourse D
- Never get power or air with deferred APU (again concourse D)
- Always having to wait outside your gate for a long time to park (mostly on D)
- Waiting for jet bridge drivers
- 2 Burger Kings on D and no healthy food options
- Commuter hotels are the worst quality for the price compared to the ones I hve stayed at in other cities
- Chief pilots will be in ATL
- Concourse D
- Driving through the world's most lovely and safe neighborhoods on your way to work (College Park, Hapeville)
- Concourse D

I know many of you RAH guys say IAD is much better then ATL, but what you don't realize is that you never park on D or C (C is getting better slowly) and those are the worst concourses when it comes to ground support. A and B are great in ATL so I can see why you think ATL is so good.

Anyone else have any other wonderful things that ATL offers we will be missing if we go to IAD?

hardly any restaurant discounts in the ATL-and the prices are like 2 bucks higher than other airports.

My favorite is being asked "Are you reddy to boort?" when calling in range.

Let's just say this thread is spot on. Word of advice: Do NOT let your emotions run you in IAD. You'll have a heart attack in the first week. That place is a train wreck.

We joke whenever we see the Ethiopian 777 parked on the ramp "The Dulles Employee shuttle is here."

"Ness Gess in line" (while alternately picking 3" fingernails and staring at ceiling)

B Concourse

If you need some relax time away from the crowds at the A gates, just go over to the B concourse. It's usually pretty nice over there.

It's been a couple of years, but Dunkin Donuts, Fuddruckers, and the really good sandwich place (I forget the name) were always popular. Plus the bathrooms aren't crowded.
