Hi!

The last 2 days, I've twice gotten (I am a pilot) "Taxi to Runway XX."

I thought that the new FAA procedure required ATC to tell us the exact route to taxi to the runway.

Comments? Info?

Thanx!

What new procedure? I'm not trying to be glib, I've just not seen anything that changes what that clearance has always meant which is if no route is specified then you can pick your own route as long as you don't cross or taxi onto the runway in the clearance. I found a link from the FAA from last summer on this topic.

I was in Vegas a few weeks ago when 25R was closed and they were departing 1R. I was quite amazed by a succession of major airline pilots asking if they could cross 25R when they had been given "taxi to" 1R. Of course, if you are not sure then clarify, but the ground controller was obviously annoyed. She was clearly annunciating "TAXI TO" to everybody but people weren't getting it. On the flip side, I've also had contract tower controllers who didn't know what that clearance meant, either.

Earlier this summer, the FAA issued a change telling controllers that they have to give you the exact routing they want you to follow.

One of the ATL controllers started a thread warning us that the change was coming.

Ahh. Thanks.

It's just called being safe. I've been one of those guys you're talking about. Honestly, I'd much rather the controller be annoyed that I asked a second time to confirm crossing rather than have to appologize to them for NOT stopping. And then face FAA action for my mistake!

Always be leary crossing. If in doubt, ask. Again!

It must be kicking in here. We have two runways, a main one served by Taxiway A and a much smaller crosswind that parallels Taxiway B. The crosswind runway and B Taxiway were closed over the summer, and Alpha is the only way to the only open runway, but we still got and continue to get taxi to 32 via Alpha.

The progressive taxi routings are still required. If you are not getting it, its simply b/c someone (controller) is being lazy...it will catch up with them. The FAA has been doing random safety audits on tapes to ensure that controllers are doing their jobs...its only a matter of time.

In this day and age of runway incursion awareness and all the bigger problems that could come with them, even when provided taxi clearance to a runway that involves crossing another runway, I always call approaching the intermediate runway with a "crossing runway x" call, just as a reminder to the controller. I really don't care if they're annoyed.
