anyone know what's going on at compass? with the latest vacancy at only 162 CA and 150 FO's, that's a far cry from the 400 they told everyone during the interview. also heard that all new hires have been sent home from montreal and that the compass instructors have quit. whats going on?

Nah. Didn't you hear? The wunderkind instructors over there in the training department are going to bust all us NWA guys if the flowback ever happens so they can protect their own. They said so... quite openly.

Might want to ask them how well that strategy worked for the Eagle instructors who found themselves out of a job after trying to pull the same stunt....

I have always heard 360ish, and that includes management and such.

I guess they like staffing short and having premium trips. This is all why I say dont pick up open time especially when it is premium pay. Remember there are 1000's of furloughed pilots just looking for a job to survive. I was one at one time!

As far as the Montreal thing. Let's stop the rumor here. There is an instructor shortage up there (CAE's doing). I think the issue comes down to CAE instructors transferring to other CAE locations. To deal with the shortage, the company has sent a few (6 to be exact) of the new hires that were there (myself included) home for a few weeks while they get caught up by finishing up the new hires that are still there.

I'm scheduled to go back up on the 27th to finish up. Personally, I was glad to come home for a few weeks. Nothing like a paid vacation and not having to be away from the family for four weeks straight.

I didn't think they paid you while in training at Compass? Or is it they don't provide housing while in training?

Wrong on both counts there. You get paid monthly guarantee starting with indoc and are provided single occupancy hotel while in Montreal. Only exception is that you cover your hotel for the 4 days of indoc in MSP.

There is language addressing training provisions for flowbacks in the JPWA, not that it will matter.

Flow throughs have never worked. Employers tend not to keep long term employment and job protection provisions in this business anyway.

Compass is an asset that can be sold and fleet renewal is expensive. They could package this up with Comair (which they have been openly pining to sell).

Not that I want any of this to happen. I'm a supporter of one list across the brand. But, it is what it is.

I always understood 360 was anticipated, and 400 only if we took delivery of extra aircraft. At one point there were discussions of 2 additional frames to supplement the original 36, but that was only rumor.

Bendo's latest post on Compass Points explained that there's been staffing issues on the CAE side up in Montreal and that people have been sent home for a week or so before resuming training.

So, if final CA numbers stand at 162 and final FO numbers settle at 162 that equals 324 line pilots. 324 line pilots divided by the 36 airframes means a ration of 9:1, 360 pilots was a 10:1 ratio. Seems like typical Compass, trying to make the pennies scream by staffing to the lean side.

This is wrong. There are no "wunderkind instructors," in fact there aren't even any Compass instructors. The training is outsources to CAE, whose instructors don't give a crap about NWA pilots, or Compass pilots for that matter. Most of them transferred out of YUL which totally screwed Compass.

I don't know what your agenda is but there is no animosity from the Compass pilot group toward NWA pilots. Most of us came to Compass hoping to flow to NWA, heck, we share the same MEC. How about some brotherhood?

There are still classes in the pipe that started in the past month that weren't on the vacancy bid. The Oct. 17th class was postponed a couple weeks as well, I think that is the last planned class for now. Also, pretty much every class has been slowed down up at/going to CAE due to their instructor issues. Seems like most people are experiencing a 2 week wait after finishing their week in MSP for the general subjects portion before they head up.

I agree, but remember that Compass Pilots didn't design the airline. The current Compass is better than the bs that NWA management was trying to shove down your throats during bk. The better of the two evils. Yet not the Compass pilot's fault. Not that it makes it any easier to swollow though.

And to the Compass guys, although its not your fault that you fly this former mainline flying, just be careful to take reactions to it with a grain of salt instead of thinking someone has it out personally for you. I know that many of you are former ATA, so I'm sure these guys know what I mean.

BTW I know that the Compass pilots uniforms were selected to look like the NWA pilots as much as possible, are you guys getting new uniforms with this merger?

I'm certainly not in on the decision making process, but I seriously doubt we will be getting new uniforms. I think the idea behind using the same uniforms was to save money when people flow up (or down). It would be a waste of money for the company to buy new uniforms for everyone at this point.
