Delta to adjust fleet quickly after Northwest deal
Wednesday October 1, 6:22 pm ET
By Joshua Freed, AP Business Writer Delta plans to shift planes to new routes soon after Northwest deal closes
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Within months of Delta's buyout of Northwest, the airline will begin shifting its planes around to put them on the right routes, a Delta executive said on Wednesday.
The two fleets will operate separately until after the federal government signs off on a joint operating certificate, which could take much of next year. But they don't have to wait that long to shift planes to different routes, with the potential for Northwest 747s to fly out of Atlanta, for instance.

"We can move our planes around as soon as the merger is complete," said Joanne Smith, Delta Air Lines Inc.'s senior vice president of in-flight service, speaking at a breast cancer fundraiser at a Northwest Airlines Corp. hangar on Wednesday.
The airlines hope to close the deal by the end of this year. Smith said they expect to begin shifting planes during the second quarter, which runs through the end of June 2009.

Northwest and Delta have only the Boeing 757 in common. Beyond that, their mainline fleet is a stew of Northwest's 100 to 125-seat DC-9s up to its 747s. Delta's fleet, meanwhile, includes the 767, with 287 seats.

Initially, the crews will follow the airplane. So if Northwest's 747s move to Atlanta, 747 flight attendants based at Northwest hubs could be forced to commute. That's because the Federal Aviation Administration requires them to be trained on the particular plane on which they're working.
Smith said Delta will try to minimize the disruption, adding, "Moving flight attendants to fly the airplane in this industry is not unusual."

Delta executives have said they believe they can get $2 billion in cost savings by joining the airlines. Matching the right planes to the right routes is an important part of that savings, Smith said.
"We've got to do that. It's in everybody's best interest," she said.

The airlines will also be making their food offerings the same. So does that mean Delta coach customers will have to give up their free snack, or will Northwest travelers again get one for free?
"You know, I think I know the answer, but I'm pretty sure we haven't shared that yet," said Julie Showers, Northwest's senior vice president for in-flight services. Last week shareholders at both companies approved the stock swap. The main remaining hurdles are antitrust clearance by the Department of Justice, and a lawsuit seeking to stop the deal which is set for trial Nov. 5 in San Francisco

Heyas,

DAL management is negotiating in the press. They KNOW conditions and restrictions will cost them a fair portion of their "integration synergies".

There is a LOT of pressure coming down from DAL management right now, in the form of quids, to get a negotiated deal.

Can't we all just get along? The new Delta has a lot of potential - I'd hate to see another USAirways integration DISASTER...

Here are the RUMORS I have heard so far with regard to airplanes moving from base to base:

SEA---move A330s to JFK (to do longer ME flights), and move 767ER to SEA to do Asia and intra Asia

ATL--move some 744s down there (from DTW?) and A330s to do South America, and some Europe, DC9s to compete with Airtran directly

DTW---move some 772s up there to do Asia

SLC--Put A330s in there to do CDG, AMS, and NRT, also put A320/319s in there to replace MD90s, that would go to MSP (they can reach both coasts from there, not so from SLC)

MSP--MD90s move in there, and some A320/319s move to SLC

ANC---maybe go bye bye, have heard a few different rumors about that one

If I remember, during Haunsteins online Q&A he said he was excited to get the A330 so he could optimize routes using that AC...and I have heard the 76ER and 330 rumors also...from MANY sources.
Also heard - move A319s to CVG to fly to the East Coast.

A319s to CVG to fly to the West Coast, right? I have heard that too. I think the 73N will still do a lot of LAX, CVG, and ATL. I haven't heard much of that myself.

Regarding the 7ERs, I heard they won't be moved there but transit through from ATL/JFK and then launch out to NRT/points beyond. The ER cannot make NRT from LAX but can from SEA.

JFK - NRT on the 777 almost immediately. Possible JFK-DXB and some where in China within a year or so. Expect 787s to be traded for more 777s. We don't want the initial version of the 787...

Good Rumor

Good one too

DTW---move some 772s up there to do Asia
Quite possbile, and is being looked at.

Five more internatioal routes on the 330 out of SLC

MSP--MD90s move in there, and some A320/319s move to SLC
88 Can hit both coasts out of MSP

ANC---maybe go bye bye, have heard a few different rumors about that one
Maybe to NRT.
We are focusing on cargo on passenger flights.

There is more but that is a good start.

Has new Song....er....Delta broken out the panic checklist now that Southwest announced MSP service? At least the MSP-MEM route will be safe.
