I flew N37223 from 08/05 until 05/06 at Airnet out of BHM and down through Florida. That bird was the best plane ever. It took beatings through weather that I didn't think it ever would. No autopilot, no radar, no problem. No one ever wanted it because it wasn't as fast as some of the other 310s, but I loved this plane. She was lucky for me.

Yup, out of the 15-20 310s in the fleet at the time I think 223 was my favorite as well. A good, tough old ship. The bird strike thing I mentioned was kinda nasty, happened late night enroute OMA-DSM, 7000 ft. I hit 4-5 big birds, probably geese. Took 2 in the horizontal stab, one each side, smashed the leading edges back to the spar; one in the right spinner, mangled the spinner and had cooked, stinky bird lodged back on the cylinders; one hit the right wing just out from the nacelle, also pushed the leading edge back to the spar. Needless to say she was done for the night... but patched up and back in action a few weeks later.

It's kinda funny to me how I miss haulin' the mail in the old 310 and buzzing around the western US in the mighty Beech. No money, but fun times.

This thread and all the reminiscing about Junkstreams reminds me of a conversation I had with one of my FO's recently.....

We were talking about how we'd started flying and I mentioned I'd been at ACA on the J41. First off he asked what that was and then after pausing for a second asked.."Why would you want to fly a turboprop?".. How times have changed!

Nice shot of the J ball. That's at RIC before they built the new terminal. Back when VA was still a Southern State....
