Nobody saw Pearl Harbor coming either..

I'm guessing that Ayer and friends would jump at an opportunity to cash out & wash their hands of the mess that they've made of a once-great airline.

Actually, I think you are dead wrong. The one thing that Alaska has going for it, is that we are not for sale. The Board of Dictators are all with other very successful companies. They love to say they are on the board of a MAJOR?? airline. They don't need the money. EGO rules.

but, We are down 14% today, USAyer might sound better.....

If you work for Alaska be VERY afraid. If you merge with usair your unit costs will double and they'll end up telling you they need to focus on the lucrative BUF-PHL type runs "because that's where the money is" and they'll shut down SEA and all your west coast routes (the "money losing" anchor) and furlough you out of seniority and then tell you how they saved you. Study the history of the PSA, Piedmont, and America West mergers. Delta knew; learn what they did to kill their little near-merger. Get ready to burn the house down if that's what it takes to prevent it.

usair = death

I agree there's plenty of ego to go around at Ayer Group, but I don't think it trumps their greed.

BTW, everything's for sale at the right price.

With the DL/US merger US was going to close ATL and move the hub to Scranton. They must know what they're doing, because they've done it before...right? lol

Actually, one of said people is an old family friend. He told my father Alaska could be up for sale several months ago. Wouldn't say who was involved. I sincerely hope US Airways is not a consideration. US Air has destroyed enough good airlines already. Long live the Alaska Spirit.

There is only one airline that could buy Alaska and that airline just signed a deal with WestJet. LCC wont last through the winter at the current price of oil... they are not buying or merging with anyone.

No, they have enough cash on hand to outlast a bunch of airlines. They have enough money to make it probably till the following winter.

US Airways pushed out their debt payments a couple years before oil shot up. With their size and almost $4 billion in cash I think they'll make it through the winter. The winter after that, who knows?

Actually, look out NK. Routes FLL and south that USair wanted years ago. Not to mention TPG ties old ties to the west. Oh yeah, forgot to mention. Benny boy was at USair to set up the large Carribbean ops that they had planned for years ago. Now what he doing, hmmm?

Actually, you could buy EVERY share of Alaska stock with the money Alaska has in the bank and get about $400m in change.

Ask Carl Ichan how easy it is to buy an airline with their own money.
