UAL, CAL Pilots Join Forces In Face of Airlines’ New Alliance
The pilots of United and Continental Airlines announce their intent to align efforts geared toward promoting the careers and futures of their respective groups in the face of the recent Global Cooperation agreement between their respective airlines. Leaders of the two pilot groups, both represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), decided to build upon the relationship formed when merger discussions involving Continental and United brought them together earlier this year.



The two MECs issued a joint press release today.

On June 19, United Airlines and Continental Airlines announced an agreement to link their networks and operations worldwide, and for Continental to join the Star Alliance. This agreement not only represents a new dynamic for both airlines, it also has the potential for significant impact on the careers of the pilots of both airlines.

“Just as United and Continental management have decided to form an alliance to strengthen the relative positions of their airlines against competitors and reap the benefits of a cooperative relationship, we are also positioning ourselves to use the combined strength of our pilot groups to leverage opportunity and defend against any threats their alliance presents,” Captain Steve Wallach, chairman of the United Chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association and Captain Jay Pierce, chairman of the Continental Chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association, said in a joint statement. “Both our pilot groups have given up millions upon millions of dollars in pay, retirement provisions and benefits so that our airlines could survive. As our management teams develop their new business plans to meet the challenges of today’s airline industry and economic environment, we must be included in the process. The corporate arrangement hashed out between United and Continental will only be maximized with the full involvement and support of both airlines’ pilots.”

As part of the effort, the pilots from both airlines will coordinate information sharing, will work together to develop strategy, and will cultivate a joint action plan aimed at enhancing the careers and futures of both airlines’ pilots. The relationship expands beyond the normal level of commitment shared as members of ALPA, and involves a greater level of communication, coordination and planning.

“The alliance between our two pilot groups will provide our members a strong, unified and determined voice; one that will have to be reckoned with as our two airlines move forward under their new agreement,” said the two union leaders. “We will work together to ensure that the pilots of United and Continental are heard and our concerns are addressed.”
 
Not unless we are picking up pieces. No offense but CAL mgmt tried this and after looking at UAL's books decided that alliance was best. We are in a cash hoarding mode (increased $890M in 3 mo) and there will have to be a very good deal to relase some of it. A merger won't be a good deal.

Raising cash by selling assets is not good either.

Unless I missed something, everyone, including Larry, said that CAL "walked" away. Even Tilton.


Try telling that to Pan Am and Eastern.

No offense Sonny - but I highly doubt it. The star alliance is one thing, merging is different. Unless UAL stops hehmorraging money, I don't think any mergers will be coming down the pike anytime soon. If a merger was to occur, it would have happened two months ago...that was about as ripe as conditions were to get.

They were looking at ALL options and decided that the alliance first was the best. I agree. It is cheaper to make your cutbacks before you merge.
Don't be surprised with an eventual merger. United is not going away.

I have no clue if UAL is going away or not, however that wasn't the point of the thread...I will bet you $100 we'll never merge with you guys. I'll PM you my contact info for the bet if you desire.

No, what you smell is unchecked capitalism and corporate greed, careful not to fall into it.

OK, with the slated furloughs, what's the total amount per airline afterwards? If they are similar, that might be an answer also. I just can't believe Tilton could put anything together like that. Unless Larry and the gang are trying to find a way to get Tilton's 13 mill for his removal, it just seems strange. Who knows?
 
No firm numbers of furloughs (pilots)at UAL not sure about CAL. The 950 was from Management after the Union put pressure on them for a number. I am not aware of any other groups that have announced furloughs except for the FA's who are in the middle of a buy out of 600 or so.
There has not been a definite number released as the TA regarding the mitigation of furloughs is not yet finalized....seems like this is all blended in some way...small or large. Who knows how many leaves, buyouts, schedule reduction, ect. will account for.
 
I hope your numbers are cut like CAL'S. Early outs (not very good, but if the guy was going anyway), and the same with F/A. I don't know their offer, but have heard it's as bad as the Pilots. It's a start. Also offered COLA's (company offered leaves). Numbers running around are 150 taking retirement, 150 taking COLA's and 150 furloughed. Total random, but somewhere in the park. CAL sent out 500 notices, for legalities, but union doesn't think it'll be that bad. If fuel goes higher for extended period, I think we're all out of a job, it really doesn't matter. But to answer my own question, after 500 removed pilots (worse case this round) total pilots 4565.
