Hawaiian Airlines announced Thursday it will not add another Boeing 767 wide-body aircraft to its fleet.
The carrier said it had contemplated the addition in a letter of intent signed April 18, but has decided against it citing a delay in the date the aircraft would be in service and an uncertain economic environment.
"I know many supporters of Hawaiian Airlines' growth will be disappointed by this decision, however, the prospect of not being able to use this aircraft until very late this year against the backdrop of the recent run-up in fuel prices made this a fairly straight-forward decision," said Mark Dunkerley, president and CEO, in a statement.
Dunkerley said complications in conforming the aircraft to Hawaiian's operating certificate would have delayed the plane's entry into service until the fourth quarter.
Dunkerley said the decision will not affect the company's previously announced plans to buy four narrow-body Boeing 717-200 aircraft in the fall, or its delivery of a new Airbus in 2012.
Hawaiian operates a fleet of 18 wide-body Boeing 767-300 aircraft on 16 flights to 14 destinations outside Hawaii.

Now how will that affect the hiring numbers?

And I guess not looking to lease some Airbus in 2009 before the 'ordered' ones start to maybe show up.

Good Luck out there.

According to Dunkerly's letter to employee's there will be no new hiring till they finish evaulating their future needs and nobady hired will be furloughed as they are needed for the 717's coming on line.
Sorry I don't have anything better. Although apparently Go is cutting back and strong rumours are floating around Hawaii that their days are numbered.

Well that would be awesome! (GO)

But might leave a gap for a competent competitor, something HAL doesn't need.

Dan Roman,
I'm out of the country and out of touch. What about the class scheduled to start monday? Is the latest vacancy bid going to be redone (again)?

Latest word is the last bid did not reflect the 767 so it still stands and no new hires effected. The 76's paperwork was screwed up and the aircraft was apparently not as advertised, they are still looking for more long haul aircraft but they have to be a good fit and a good deal. At least that's the word I got.

Enjoy your trip

Soaring airline fares are playing a big part in the slackening tourism industry, but representatives of both Hawaiian Airlines and United Airlines said fuel costs will keep pushing fares up.
Fuel will cost Hawaiian $204 million more in 2008 than last year, said Hawaiian's President and CEO Mark Dunkerley. Hawaiian was forced to cancel announcement of a new long-haul route because of the run-up in fuel costs.

Anybody knows what kind of route Hawaiian was close to announce?

Are you guys doing Manilla yet? How is that layover? Do you guys like SYD better?

Bye Bye--General Lee

Just interviewed last Tuesday and Wednesday. This is a little dissapointing news. I do hope that the current bid that was out was not including this aircraft. Anyway I will find out one way or another in the near future.

Best of luck to all those who I interviewed with. Hawaiian definately has a strong pool of applicants based on the group of guys that I interviewed with.

The last bid DOES NOT INCLUDE the 767 that was cancelled.
They are still looking at some older 767's that are in better shape than the one they rejected. Leased A-330's are being looked at also.
I wouldn't worry about that plane they rejected, it was just a frugal business decision.
The situation right now with future aircraft is a day to day thing depending how many and what type of A/C become avialiable on the market.
We still are interviewing and hiring until the end of the year. (and maybe into next year)

We started that a couple of months ago. It's a very nice hotel in the heart of town. I prefer SYD just because I think there's more to do, and it's a little easier to get around town. Also, for me, MNL is just too dang hot. But we do have several people who bid mostly MNL layovers, so everyone has their favorites.

Yeah, we all know what kind of "favorites" those guys have;)

That would be the "LBFM" type of favorites!
