NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors announced plans Tuesday to shut four pickup and SUV plants, saying high fuel prices have produced a rapid and permanent change in consumer preferences away from the truck models on which it has depended.
At a news conference in Wilmington, Del., GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner also unveiled plans to produce more fuel efficient vehicles
The plants to be closed include two U.S. facilities - Moraine, Ohio and Janesville, Wis., along with plants in Canada and Mexico. The plants will close in 2009 and 2010. Each plant has about 2,500 employees.
Wagoner also said GM is looking at possibly selling its Hummer brand, the large SUV based on military vehicles.
He also announced that GM has approved production of the Chevrolet Volt, a so-called plug-in hybrid vehicle that can run about 40 miles without any use of gasoline. That is due in showrooms by the end of 2010. .
The plans were announced ahead of GM's (GM, Fortune 500) annual meeting Tuesday. It follows similar plans unveiled last month by rival Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500), although Ford did not give details of plant closing plans.

There is at least one (freight dog) company that serves the auto makers.

I'm surprised not much discussion about how this will affect business.... Cherry, Grand, KFS, USAJ, Twister.. to name a few

Another wonderful day for the Dayton, Ohio region.

Won't effect Grand Aire anymore since they fired all their pilots a few weeks ago. Might effect everyone else a little but how much slower can a busy season get?

I am guessing it means I will be flying car parts instead of truck parts. <gee> In the future I'm guessing that I will be flying electric car parts, instead of gas powered car parts. As long as GM and Ford are still making some type of cars (electric or gas) someone will have to fly some car parts. I'm thinking that once GM and Ford (and all the other car makers) really start cranking out electric cars and gas prices force people to buy them the good times might just be back for a while.

It's either that or we got back to the ol' horse and carriage. In which case I will have a job picking up the patties. Hey, ya gotta pay the bills right?

And yet we have been incredibly busy this week. If it keeps up at this pace people will be over guarantee in no time.

Wow, I wasn't aware of that. Where have I been. They are celebrating their 20th year (according to their website)

The FBO is still open in TOL and MX still there too. We park there, thats why I know.

It has been pretty busy this week compared to what it has been. Still nothing like it used to be though.

Hi!

And, GM announced that it will be opening 3rd shifts in plants that make the Cobalt and Malibu.

We R flying like crazy now, due to the American Axle strike being over and GM building vehicles again. We HAVE done a number of trips for hybrid car parts.

We are also doing a bunch of new PAX business, which helps with the Big 3 decline.

We also fly Toyota, Honda and Nissan, among others.

Hopefully, the American companies can come up with some great plug-in hybrid, electric and H2 fuel cell vehicles in the future, that will sell like hotcakes.
