always nice to have competition in the business, too bad these guys couldn't make it. Hopefully ASA is next to go, though.

I hope this doesn't discourage folks from trying startups...always good to have fresh faces and new business models tested out, competition is a good thing.

Good post! Bravo. I for one am hopping to interview and give them a look.

-rapid upgrade with $85-90K year income inside 1 year


-Be number 70 out of 1200 pilots inside 5 years!

-15 days off a month average lines

-Profit share (a company that actually stands a chance at a profit to boot!)

-Stock options

-Few overnights (home every night) - yes I can live in CMH

-65 brand new airplanes with factory maintenance

-young, excited, and motivated management and labor force

That's worth a look for me.. sorry if it's not everyones cup of tea, but I for one think the down side of skybus is no worse than what CAL and UAL are doing to major airline pilot pay.. They have no excuse.. they're not even start ups, and in the case of UAL, they've wiped out most of their debt with the help of the tax payer, so why not share a bit of the wealth with their pilots?

And another gem from 12-3-2007:

This company has by far the best chance to be the next SWA in the industry.. I'm home every night, and I get more days off than I've ever had before.. I earn more in my 2nd and 3rd year than all but a small handful of airlines and I get a serious amount of stock options. More over, the DO himself stated he's working very hard to raise wages, and the Teamseters are already knocking on the door to make sure of it. Any one who thinks $65K/yr will last more than a couple of years is either an idiot, or naive.. This isn't Swift! This pace has ex major airline guys crawling all over it.. they're their for a good pay day, not $65K That's just short sighted to see that and fixate on it.

skybus wasnt competition it was like a freakin dirty bomb just in existence to hurt other airlines. this is the airline industry we dont need new competition, we all do this exact same job, how many different ways can u peel a banana . what we need is a stronger pilot group who refuses to work for peanuts, like all the clowns that went to skybus.

I'll say this: Being able to work a 5am-2pm schedule 4 times a week was a very powerful allure offered by Skybus schedules. No other airline (that I'm aware of, please educate me) has/had a similar deal.

For me, the thought of having a normal family life, being able to have pets, a decent garden, coach the little league team, do volunteer work, etc. would have ALMOST been worth the initial low compensation. And if they had managed to create new markets, the pay would have been raised and this carrier would have been the balls. Ah well.

Back to the 3,5,6 on / 3-4 off grind, with commuting, I guess. It's the only "right" way to work for an airline, apparently.

Actually, when I worked at Mesa I was paid more ($96k+/yr) than any other airline gig I've had thus far, and more than I can reasonably expect to make for at least 3-5 more years at the current gig.

But if "compensation" means more than pay, as it most certainly does, you're absolutely right that Mesa pilots take it in the shorts for everything other than pay.

Fortunately, they're an ALPA carrier in contract negotiations, and I'm sure the brotherhood of pilots as represented by gentlemen such as yourself will be giving them your full support during their struggle and time of need, eh?

I hope they get themselves a good contract. However ALPA is what you make of it, weak MEC, and LEC does not lead to much success in negations.

Skybus founder 'working on a plan' to revive carrier

Skybus founder John Weikle is "working on a plan" to get the ultra-low-cost carrier back in the air again, according to the News & Record of Greensboro, N.C. Weikle's comments on reviving Skybus came just days after the carrier halted flights, stranded passengers and declared bankruptcy. "John Weikle said Monday night from Dayton, Ohio, that he had been working all weekend to build a team that could reorganize the airline and restore service," the News & Record writes. "I wrote a letter to the board today and said we've got to find a way to save this — save these 450 jobs," Weikle tells the paper.
How does he plan to do it? Weikle says the carrier still has about $10 million in cash to work with, which he believes will be enough seed money to lure new investors. The News & Record writes "Weikle is working with Mark Sparling, his vice president for finance during the founding of Skybus. Sparling and Weikle left Skybus not long before it began operations because they disagreed with the board’s direction and its choice for chief executive officer, Bill Diffenderffer." Stay tuned
