Airline Merger Talks Continue Wednesday - March 26, 2008 - 05:00 AM CT

Pilots at Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines revived discussions on resolving differences in merging their contracts, a step necessary for the carriers to proceed with a merger proposal.

The meetings have purportedly involved a handful of senior pilots and are not formal negotiations. It is unclear whether the group has made any progress.

Pilot unions, both affiliated with the Air Line Pilots Association, would not say whether any new meetings had been held. The airlines have refused to comment on union developments.

Managements of Delta and Northwest approached the pilots last month to see if they could sort out union-related contractual issues before a deal was proposed to the government and the companies' respective boards and shareholders.

Pilots at both airlines have said there would be no merger without the cooperation of the pilots and have been wrangling over how to combine seniority lists. Seniority is crucial for determining what planes and routes pilots fly and when they work. Negotiations ended nearly two weeks ago without a deal, dousing expectations that the airlines would strike a quick merger agreement.

Wait, weren't you listening? The General doesn't lower himself to laying over in the cities where Northwest pilots lay over. He spends his nights in Rio and Vienna. *Yawn*

NWALPA text message to DALPA, we want to talk. DALPA to NWALPA o.k., what's on your mind?

We know that NWALPA wants to keep this merger alive, there's quite a bit more in it for them than for the Delta pilots, let's see if they come around.

I see a merger as a hard sell to the Delta pilots at this time. More 777s coming, more DC-9s parking.

Still doubtful as to the successful conclusion of all this. NWA guys are getting a lot more of the $$$ thrown to the pilot groups...and bringing less to the table.

In any case, to go forward, there must be an agreed-upon SLI with NO fences and NO arbitration.

Don't see that happening.

P.S. Our own management will not accept a SLI with fences, according to one of our network guys; why? because as a minimum the 787 and 777 will be a combined category. If we were to merge and actually take delivery of the 787s NWA has on order, there is no way that mgmt would accept a system where a combined category would actually be split between the DAL guys fenced on the 777 and the NWA guys the 787--no way! It would be as absurd as fencing the NWA guys strictly to the 757 but not allow them to fly the 767.

"No arbitration, no fences, or no merger" has been our MEC's mantra from the beginning, and I don't know of one DAL type who disagrees.

Ummmmm. Did I miss something from FDJ2's post? The only statement he made about the merger was clearly in sarcasm. The other statement he made was an opinion that is generally shared by most of us in the DAL crew room.

The second part of your post is merely your opinion and not FACT as you say. If I were to reword your post to be more factual than I would say something like, "Delta posters don't think the seniority integration will go through as NWA pilots believe it will because they don't think NWA has much to offer." If Delta pilots didn't think the merger would go through than we wouldn't be having this discussion would we?
 
Both sides see fuel prices rising, the economy going south, legacies trimming the fleet and are thinking.....

"hey we might as well merge and sacrifice a couple thousand junior pilots in order to keep the airline afloat."

Well my source is a conversation I had with the Chairman of LEC44, He told me yesterday the deal is dead, he stated at our recent LEC meeting last week, in front of 300 pilots the deal is dead. Thunderous applause from those in attendance at the news. I'll take his word for it.

Now if NWALPA comes in with a favorable offer that can win us over. You might have a shot at breathing new life into the process. We all know NWALPA has been trying to get the ball rolling on this again. I wonder why?

If your MEC has it's way you'll be a deltoid one day. NWALPA has been pushing hard to breathe new life into this merger. I wonder what they've heard recently that's got them so spooked.
 
Quite true FDJ2.
They may want to talk because the know what is going to happen to all of those 9's. Might want the DAL boys that just got hired take the brunt of that. Heck maybe I should apply for that Duty Pilot job.
I think the only thing that we as a group would accept is our offer. It is fair and balanced. If you think that you can predict what is on your CA's mind or this entire industry you are full of it. That is why there will never be any agreement for slotted seniority that we adjust in five years. (You can try but we will vote it down)
Of note there are more reasons that just the 787 in regard to fences. IE moving 400, and 777 around to maximize yeild. That will come sooner than later. Fences would just complicate the matter.

sucks for everyone, but it appears more so for DAL. Bottom line the industry is on the verge of being in a world of hurt and maybe the NWA guys are being realists. What would it take for the DAL guys to wake up and realize every thing isn't "peachy"

Not spooked at all. Read what has already been put out long ago. NWAALPA believes that consolidation is inevitable. NWAALPA, unlike DALPA, believes that you don't have as much say as you think you do in whether your Fortune 150 company, and the shareholders,creditors, and BOD (you only have 1 seat), decides to do a merger or not despite soundbites from RA and EB. Show me a legal document that gives DALPA the ability to stop a merger.

Besides, as all knowing as you claim to be, if NWAALPA was hearing something that had them worried I'm sure we would have heard it from you right away:rolleyes:.

Yeah, right..I would say a word about the 787 coming to NWA, but you will just give some smart a$$ comment about "when it comes, if it ever does "...etc etc
same old rhetoric.
