Thanks for the sobering opinions, guys. I was an intern at Astar back in college and have an in with the company. I was ready to jump on over just as soon as I could, but now I'm thinking twice.

Could someone say a little more about the schedules though? I currently live about 2.5 to 3 hours driving time away from ILN. How long is the reserve call out? What are the min days off for reserves? When you're on a 16 day stretch, are you stuck at an outstation on the weekends? It there any way to get home, or are you gone for the full 16 days?

1.5 hours. They weren't able to get that increased at all. About 3 times per year, they will call you out with only 1.5 hours to show. The rest of the time you will be able to check your schedule on the computer and see your assignment a couple of hours or more in advance.

What are the min days off for reserves?

12 per bid period. (8 days of reserve, 6 off, 8 days of reserve, 6 off......generally speaking)

When you're on a 16 day stretch, are you stuck at an outstation on the weekends?

It depends on the airplane/ schedules.

Best advice for you is to bid reserve no fly, and drive home occasionally since you live so close.

Oh yeah, one other thing exkuzme, in the name of responsibility, you don't want to come to work at AStar......we're not CATII.

Good luck.

Yeah, how'd that work out for you tonight?

It's vewy vewy quiet around the Hoot without all those 727's tonight.

:D

See...told ya! We're toast!

You're right AV8OR. This whole CATII thing is just blown way out of proportion.

It is COMPLETELY excusable to have a complete and utter service failure by the entire airline (oops..except one airplane) on any given night. Or heck two nights in a row for that matter.

Of course it is all ABX's fault because the Air Force decided to build a base all those years ago in a "Fog Magnet".

Why of course they should have seen the Mecca of airports that CVG was (or was to be rather). How stupid of them.

You are right, you probably are not doomed, and you may be CATII someday, but this is just one more collective event that adds to the uncertain future of all of us that are "working" for DHL.

How many customers will this event cost us?

What happened to the CAT III bus that diverted to JFK?

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/DHL165

But that doesn't matter now does it? Because after all how many times have you needed CAT II capability in the past 25 years right?

I wonder what a Fedex customer would do if he received a package from Fedex but failed to receive one from UPS that he was expecting. After calling UPS, he is told, sorry, we just didn't see the need to have our aircraft certified for CAT II/III. You know, we've been doing this for 25 years and everything and it just doesn't happen that often...so what??

Glad to see it's cleared up a little this morning so ya'll can finally get in.

http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KILN/arrivals

When it absolutely positively has to be there....SOMETIME. :puke:

And yes, to nip it in the bud, you will see a few ABX arrivals this morning. With a fleet that size you are bound to have a few that are NA CAT II for a variety of reasons such as time evals due, or numerous other deferrals, etc.

Sorry to sound so bitter, but it just chaps my you know what to see a once great job being erroded away by thought processes like this.

We're all in this together (at least for a little while longer) and I just think the superiority complex of a minor few of the legacy "we've always done it this way because we are and our call sign indicates that we are DHL" guys and the "A containers" need to be put in check. (I know AV8OR isn't one of the legacy guys BTW...just has the attitude. Although, I guess sitting sideways for 8 plus years is kinda legacy in it's own special way.)

All of you that I have had the pleasure of meeting in person have been really decent people.

Actually he is legacy. And the bus isn't CATIII, it's CATII. And since we've beat the crap out of about why that is, and what's being done about it, I'd suggest to Astar guys that we don't waste the bandwith debating this. If you've got nothing else to do in your company paid hotel room in the Hoot though, I guess it would be ok. ;) This thread is supposed to be about discussing pros/cons for people who are thinking about coming here. Not a "mine's bigger than your's" contest.

So is the "company paid hotel room in the Hoot" kinda like a bonus for a job well done???

BTW, I'll check with you next time to ascertain where I need to post stuff. Maybe you could help moderate over on Yahoo and have the Astar guys and those who wish for us to die to post on their own board too.

Nope. Another of the things we got in the new CBA. Didn't say anything to you guys about posting whatever. Just our guys. As to the ABX Yahoo board, that is a joke over there. I think our guys got tired of being poked fun at. I know I did.

Just curious, but with all these great improvements you guys got with the new CBA which will surely drive costs up and with DHL hemorraging cash right now, are you not even the slightest bit curious as to why the sudden change of heart from Daz and Germany???

I guess it was good enough to land but not taxi , apparently two DC9's taxiied off the runway into the mud, Its not Astar pilots fault for not being cat II just like its not Abx pilots fault for having the majority of their fleet C container

not being one to post on any boards... at least DHL knows what our costs will be for FOUR years. Can ABXA say the same?

mine is little, so I'm outta this contest!

Don't come to work at either place, both sides of the fence suck

To a reasonable extent somewhat maybe...there isn't that clear?!!?

The big variable on costs to DHL right now is how many Astar recovery flights each week they have to pay us to do.

Keep 'em comin. That was to easy. I'll be here all week. :D

(Man, I musta woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. )

Lord I apologize and please be with the starving pygmies down in New Guinea.

You know before you post information about recovery flights. You need to get your facts straight. Both airlines recover the other. I just called a friend in AOC to find out how many flights ABX recovers for us and he said very few. They post all of the information on the intranet. I'll try to copy it here so we know the facts.
