Skywest recently started Extended Overwater training for all pilots and flight attendants. Skywest is suppose to start flights to the Carribean soon.

I think people use the word ETOPS in the wrong context. Did you mean to say that Skywest got approval for overwater flying, or did Skywest actually do proving runs with the FAA to get 60, 90 or 120 minutes ETOPS authority?

maybe it something they wanted to do a while ago, too bad they lost the flying in ATL to other DCIs that fly the nice southern routes...this training is only about a year late.
oh well better later then never.

I don't think the OP meant ETOPS. First, if I recall, it's not needed for diverts in those areas of operations.

Extended Over-water Operations is another matter. I doubt that those CRJ's are on ETOPS maintenance programs, etc. HOWEVER, if I see 'ETOPS' painted on a nose gear door, I'll take all that back. ;-)

that doesn't equate to needing an ETOPS program.

Exactly, ETOPS does not = extended over water training. People are going to training for extended over water operations IE swimming around in a pool. I have heard NOTHING about Skywest planes being certified for ETOPS.

AR = Atlantic Routes

They are routes that are used to cross the Atlantic to go to Europe.

There are a bunch of AR routes that run North-South off shore. It's a good way to avoid the mess that is the north east corridor if you are operating New England to Florida.

I would bet it is the over water exemption that ASA has and helped Skywest obtain. Thanks to our training dept.(quasi etops) you have to remain within 162 miles of land.
