DAL & NWA Pilot Discussion Impasse Rumor - True or False?

I hear that the NWA pilots want to ensure that the Delta pilots NEVER get access to the 747s (200s and 400s). Is that true? Odd since Delta 777 pilots currently make more than NWA 747-400 pilots...

I don't know about the walking out part, but the fence baloney is just that. What you heard was dead wrong.

There WERE fences, but it was more like a ratio. There have been Greenbook (ex-Republic) guys on the 747-400,-200 and DC-10 from just after the merger in 86. During the Roberts Award, each position award for those aircraft, as well as the 757, were "metered" from each part of the list (red/green).

If memory serves, the red guys were metered faster than green, but once awarded, green guys exercised their FULL DOH for bidding purposes. The fences dropped dead on 01/06, so it's whatever your DOH can hold now, anyway. Lots of Green guys at the top of those lists, now.

It was this metering process that was the genesis of NWA's pecuiliar block/reserve position bids.

So, I heard a rumor that I cannot confirm but it is interesting nonetheless. Plus, there's a precedent for it....

The precedent is that Northwest pilots currently block any former Republic pilot from flying the 747s. Is that really true? I've heard that the senior Republic pilots left from that merger can only aspire to flying the A330 and not the 747s. I'm sorry, but if that's true that is just lame. How does that promote airline pilot group unity?

You make it sound like the negotiations are being held on FI by the guys who post here.
 
Easy, I bypassed the training and took the pay and stayed on the A-320. $205 an hour was the rate for the -400 international pay. BUT, big but, one did not get the pay until you finished training and IOE which could take months. Since retirement pay was based on one's best 5 years out of the last 10 and I only was under NWA's program for 5 years I opted for the better retirement payout. And I have gotten every penny of it too, BTW. Better than having the "vanity" type rating. :)

That makes sense. It just didnt add up initially when you said you got the 747 but that airplane wasn't listed. I hope you can understand why that might cause some confusion....at least a little? I have a great deal of respect for Republic pilots (much moreso than the guys you initially merged with at NWA) so I was not trying to slander you in any way. Anyway, glad you got to keep your retirement and it worked out the way it did.

I think the guy was just trying to get the facts of what happened. Anyway, I think along with what you are saying, the Republic guys who would have been fenced from say 747 flying were able to bid and receive an award for that airplane if hours in excess of what was originally planned became available?
 
I don't think it matters. Once the fences are in place, make them indefinite. The FIRST 747 they purchase will be bid-able by the new list. Meaning, if they never buy new 74's, yup some will never see them. That's not possible, unless they want to run them till they fall apart and die. There MUST be new orders. Maybe the 787 or 777-300 will be bought to take over for the whale.

Don't thin they will keep those things that long. I don't have a dog in the fight, but I don't believe it will matter. Good luck on implementation. I hope it hurts everyone the same amount. NO WINFALL's!

Perhaps you didn't see that I actually qualified this entire post as a rumor from the beginning. This is an information board and I asked for opinions and perspectives.

Thanks, I just hope that any DAL/NWA merger goes smoother than REP/NWA did. But you can see already how the positions harden without even any real facts available.

The opening statement from the NWA team at the beginning of the negotiations in 1986 was "no Republic puke will ever get his hands on a Northwest wide body airplane". So the battle was on. The Tom Roberts award kinda took the wind out of their sails, I'm afraid. I did train in the A-320 under NWA's training department and I received excellent training and the utmost courtesy in every respect. Unfortunately the DC-10 program was run by hardliners and they gave REP guys a really bad time for a while. I'm glad I missed that. :)
