Need some sage advice

Hi,

Just curious what some of you have to say....

I have to chose between two jobs in the next week to 2 weeks.

One is a 135 job that I would have to relocate for, not too far but nonetheless. The starting pay is a bit higher but will not be typed in the aircraft initially ( they mentioned in-house training), ( the a/c in question isn't used by many opeartors other than charter and cargo). Looks to be a year or so for that when the upgrade comes. The schedule is on-call 24/7 with a small amount of "hard days" off as well.

The other is with a frax operator, decent sked but lower pay. I also will be relocating anyhow. I do get an initial type as well which would be an added bonus. There is the ability to work OT which may make up for some of the lower pay. I have a good friend at the frax and he has given me a good insight to how things are and I am trying to make an informed decision. There are pros/cons for every job and I guess I am just looking for some objective advice to make the decison a little easier. I know which way I am leaning but would like a little more input.

Thanks in advance for your time and opinion.

So, it sounds like you are trying to decide between Kalitta and Flops... My sympathies.

you're half right and thanks for the "sage" advice man.

If one of those "frax" is NJ, FX or CS, I would definetly go with the fractional. If not one of these 3, I would take the cargo gig.

it is not....

it is not....

But a year from now those three would probably look more favorably on time from one of the "other" fractionals than the 135 operator - more relevant experience.

If you are thinking of this position as more than a stop for a cup of coffee, look at the pay for 3, 5, 10 year pilots. That first year's pay at the 135 might not look so good if there is no top end.

Some "object" advice?

Okay, anvils are heavy and shouldn't be dropped on you foot. Knives are sharp and should be kept away from your body...

Sorry, couldn't resist.

C'mon guys - let's offer him some advice.

A high quality 135 operator with nice equipment would be preferrable to a low-quality fractional operator like Flight Options. Hopefully the 135 schedule wouldn't be too bad. That said, a high-quality 135 operator can be somewhat hard to find. Talk to your friends and compare and contrast.

I am predicting a lot of turbulence at Flight Options (if that is your choice) in the next year or so as the union situation gets settled - not a pretty picture.

There IS the ability to work OT at Flops, pretty much as much as you want...but you will be severely ostracized by your fellow crewmembers who will want nothing to do with you for it. It will not be something you can hide from them. Acceptance of OT only undermines the union's efforts to make Flops a career choice instead of the Mesa airlines of the fractionals.

I am not advocating one way or the other what you would do, but want you to be informed with the objective advice that going to Flops and then working OT to make up the difference will not be welcomed by your fellow crewmembers. There are reasons why respectable frax have much higher crewing ratios, and Flops staffs with skeleton crews and leaves green planes all over uncrewed.

There are a lot of pros and cons either way, and ultimately it is your decision. If you go 135, you can always move on after awhile and go for a respectable frax job. As soon as you qualify for NJA, send a resume and keep sending resumes until you get an interview...there is no better job in the fractional world.

Looks to me like you have your answer...
