World Airways Leases Two Boeing 747-400 Freighter Aircraft

PEACHTREE CITY, GA--(MARKET WIRE)--Dec 20, 2007 -- World Airways, a subsidiary of Global Aero Logistics Inc., has signed agreements with subsidiaries of Aircastle Limited (NYSE:AYR - News) for long-term leases of two Boeing 747-400 freighter aircraft, with expected delivery dates in March and October 2008.


"World Airways was the first customer for the Boeing 747C convertible cargo/passenger aircraft in 1973, and World eventually operated or leased a total of four passenger and cargo 747s," said Rob Binns, chief marketing officer. "Those 747-100s left the World Airways fleet by 1983. Today we welcome the return of the 747 to meet the growing global cargo demands of this decade and beyond."

The Boeing 747s will join the growing World Airways cargo fleet, which consists of six MD-11F and two DC-10-30 freighters.

Aircastle Limited is a global company that acquires and leases high-utility commercial jet aircraft to airlines throughout the world.

World Airways provides customized transportation services for major international passenger and cargo carriers, the United States military, major freight forwarders and international leisure tour operators. That confirmation of the leases, together with the movement caused by age 60 (65?) means that World now needs to hire approx 20 DC10 FE/SO's, 10 DC10 FO's and around 10 MD11 FO's based on the last bid.

So if anyone is interested in applying to World now would be a good time. As a reference World currently has just about 425 on the seniority list.
 
Nothing on the website...

There doesn't seem to be a pilot position posted on World's website anymore. Must have closed the window. I put my stuff in there a month or so ago. Haven't heard anything. But I don't know anyone over there...who knows.
 
most of the schedules are based on a 2 week on 2 week off formula. We being a supplemental carrier will have a higher percentage of people of reserve than say a scheduled carrier. That being said our reserve system is not too bad as we are home based so you basically sit around your own house and wait for them to airline you out of town. You can drink beer and do whatever so it is not what you may be accustomed too. Very little stress involved.
 
Not to worry, Bill Garrett will find a way to lose money with them.

Yes. 2 years pro-rated at $2,000/mo.

And you have to be furloughed for two months to be off the hook.
 
Anyone know if the info on airline pilot central is acurate/up to date? Looks like they have some scheduled flights out of JFK, is this a long term contract or could this flying disappear at any moment? What is the story with the paper base of MCI? I'm unfamiliar with the term "paper base".

The info at airlinepilot central is up to date. World is getting 2 747's this year and 3 ex-NWA DC10's start arriving in January.

The scheduled flights out of JFK are freight contracts so they come and go. Usually one year contracts.

Where the flying is from doesn't really matter due to the home basing. All the lines are build based on MCI as the one pilot base. All pilots are home based so the company buys a ticket from your local airport to get to wherever in the world the aircraft are. Hence the term paper base. World doesn't actually have anything in MCI.
 
does everyone sit sideways to start or do some get the window seat from the start?

Decision hasn't been made yet. I imagine it will be a mix of both. Depending on your experience level will depend on whether you sit sideways for a while or not.
