Emirates Airlines looks to double Airbus A380 order to 110


DUBAI (Thomson Financial) - Dubai-based Emirates Airlines wants to double its order of 55 Airbus A380 super jumbo jets when airport capacity in its home base permits, its president Tim Clark said today.

"I want to double (the number of A380s on order)" from the European aircraft maker, Clark told reporters.

Retirement Age

Emirates is pleased to advise that the retirement age for pilots has been increased from 60 to 65 years (i.e. pilots will be eligible to work up to their 65th birthday).

Short of our Minimum Hours Requirement?

Due to high levels of interest expressed by candidates who are close to our minimum hours requirements, we are pleased to announce that we will now accept and review applications from candidates for First Officer positions who do not yet meet our published minimum hours requirements.

Candidates who are up to 500 hours below total and/or multi-engine jet hours are invited to submit their applications and may be offered the opportunity to attend a selection programme in Dubai.

Successful candidates must, however, meet published minimum hours requirements prior to joining.

Direct Entry Captain requirements remain unchanged.

Emirates is definitely in a major expansion. Lots of people in the USA scoff at the idea of big jets like the A380. In the last two days I've flown 4 legs. One trip to Dhaka and back and another to Riyadh and back. All flights were full with one at 454 pax. A two class B777-300ER has 442 seats so that means there were at least 12 babies. A short list of routes where an A380 can easily be filled include:

Just went to the road show in LAX and they were signing pilots up for interviews on the spot. If you didn't quite meet the minimums they gave you their card and said to email them as soon as you do and they'll set up an interview.

That's great news. I'm going on Sunday in Houston and I only have about 3,250 hours, but all of the other hours requirements are exceeded. Great news...thanks.

They are taking only jet time right now. Talked to a guy who had 1500hr jet as a FO and then upgraded to Brasilia capt. and they wouldn't interview him because there was no way he was gonna reach the 2000 min in the near future.

Imagine what would happen if EK adopted the Cathay model and opened a few bases beyond Dubai like LHR, JFK, SYD, DEL, and FRA. The quality of the applicants would improve dramatically.

I doubt it would happen because I am sure EK wants to maintain complete control of the pilot group. Too bad because that could solve a lot of problems in terms of recruitment and pilot RETENTION (living at home would improve it I bet). Not everyone wants to move to Dubai with its super-high inflation...

This is true. Only i transitioned back to the jet and now need 400 more hours before i get a class date.

Thats interesting news! When I talked to the recruiter its was definately no basing outside Dubai but to expect alot more US flights and advertising over the next year or so. Lets keep our fingers crossed. Just got short listed today. Anyone know how long from short list to call for interview?

If U R hired as a "normal" FO U have to be there 3 years. They have a special program if U come in capt qualified already, U are supposed to upgrade in 1 year. They are also hiring DECs (Direct Entry Captains) if U meet the mins and pass the more difficult sim and interview.

Anyone that has interviewed with EK lately that brought thier wife along? Did you buy her a ticket on Emirates or did you fly her on someone else to Dubai. It looks like most airlines are half the price. Presently my wife refuses to buy a ticket on Emirates and would rather fly Lufthansa or someone.

Yeah, that is one thing at Emirates that REALLY bugs me. They want us to move there with our families and stay for a long time, but they aren't willing to pay to bring our spouses with us for the interview week.

If I apply there, I will tell them they need to get both my wife and I a seat to Dubai. If they refuse, I'm not going to the interview. If they really want us to bring our families, they will make it work. If they don't want our families there, I'm not going.

That is not quite true. There is an accelerated upgrade program after 18 months if no FO's are available who meet the 3 year criteria. It amazes me that someone who doesn't even work here can be such an expert.
