Hello,

I've got an interview coming up in 3 weeks. The sim eval is going to be in a sim that uses cross hairs for the F/D. I've only ever used Vbars. Can you give me some good advice on how to use cross hairs or transition from Vbars to cross hairs?

I have used the cross hairs in the DC8, Citation Sovereign and LR Jet. I Kinda like them better than the V bars. I can't think of a way to tell you to prepair unless you can find a sim or MS Flight Simulator that has them. Just do what you have to do to keep the dot in the middle of the +.
 
I don't really like them that much. Definitely preferred the v-bars, but the dual-cue (cross hairs) don't really take any time to get used to.
 
I highly doubt they will let you use the flight director. Sim evals are used to see how well you fly and not how well you fly the flight director!
 
Think of the pitch and roll bars as suggestions instead of actuals. By this I mean if you are at 8*ANU and the pitch bar is down at say 2*ANU. Just relax the back pressure and let the nose come down to say 5*ANU. Same with the roll comands.

If you try to chase the bars you will be all over the sky. The bars are just telling you where you need to go. Not how fast to get there.
 
With the single cue V bars you need to look at the outer part (wings) to see what is happening. I know you already know that so I'm not telling you anything new. With the dual cue cross hairs you need to put the airplane in the small box where the hairs cross. Anything less is simply out of limits. Also don't stop looking at them when you break out, keep going inside and out to keep on the glide path right to touchdown. One last item, when you rotate on takeoff, ignore the vertical guidenace until you are about 100+" off the ground as they do not give accurate giuidence for roation. Look through the FD and rotate smoothly to around 15 degrees for starters.

Like another poster said, it's unlikely they will be giving you a PC as opposed to just seeing how you handle the aircraft generally. Relax and enjoy the opportunity to fly something different. I think the most important thing is not exceeding gear of flap speeds. Try thinking in these terms. For every flap movement up or down, say to yourself something like
"Flaps 5, set speed" Flaps Up, set speed" "Flaps 20, gear down, set speed", Flaps 30, Arm speed brakes, set speed, Landing checklist" All this works in just about every Boeing airliner from the 737 to the 747.

Crotch Sniffers are cool (single cue) but I prefer Chopsticks (Dual Cue) myself.

They are far more precise IMHO. Great for fine tuning.

I agre though that you will not likely use the flight director during the eval.

The sim is a test of basic airmanship.

Hey, the only thing keeping my gut in check is the fact that the damn yoke has to fit there. Me on a bus? I prefer to "fly" my craft through the footless halls of air as opposed to making CPU requests with a mouse..er, uh....happy stick. Life? Haven't flown in 20 days....I'd say pretty good.

Back to crosshairs. Nyet! Nyet! Nyet! Bars rule.
 
I didn't care for the cross-hair dual-cue type FD when I first flew it,,, until I really started following their guidance.

With a single-cue type FD, as has previously been mentioned, they're trend guidance rather than "real time accurate". With a dual-cue cross-hair FD, it's real-time, meaning you put the dot right where the crosshairs meet and you're going to get EXACTLY what is shown on the FCP/MCP. Period.

I just did a sim check for an interview where they actually "REQUIRED" the use of the FD (takeoff until approach) then had you remove it for the actual approach. Go figure. I asked for cross-hair, they gave me single-cue anyway so I just ignored it.

Most single-cue systems you have to ignore from time to time, haven't seen that being the case with a dual-cue system.

Get Microsoft Flight Sim(X or earlier Professional Edition and a descent joystick). Get the profile from a good gouge site (airlineinteviews or willfly4food). I have used the microsoft sim for several interviews including FDX and it has helped tremendously. It is a pain in the but to fly and makes your scan all that much better. I know on the new X edition you can click on the PFD to make it larger to work strictly on scan. I still use the sim to shoot practice approaches to unfamiliar or hazerdous airports or to polish the scan before recurrents.

This can't replace Higher Power or Pan Am Academy prep if it is a job that you must have. But it is a good start.
