I have been told by a few people here that as soon as JL was gone, we would have the option to wear our hats. Joe said if the hats were to go then so were the leather jackets. Are we the only airline left that requires the stupid hat? It sure does not make me feel more professional, it makes me feel like a clown.

Let's get this thing started...

I know there are different schools on this but we should have the option in my book.

I am with you. I also feel like I am in a high school marching band wearing those dam@ hats. Lets get rid of those things.

After 60 years World Airways dropped the hat. I never thought I would see the day. Now that its gone I kinda miss it. Who knew!

We have to wear hats at republic. I foget to bring mine before every trip. It they want us to look and act like pilots from 1970 then they should pay us like a pilot from 1970

Still wear them at Continental all winter for domestic, and year round for International crews(except Mexico and the Carribean). Few complain however I do see too many people carrying them instead of placing them on the head. Come on guys, bring a stupid comb and fix the hair once you get to the cockpit. Hell they even installed mirrors on the cockpit door of every aircraft in the fleet. It takes 2 seconds......

The hats are hot and no matter what size I order, it seems to shrink... They suck I agree, but pilots many years ago fought very hard to distingiush themselves as 'professionals' to win work rules, pay and benefits flying the mail. The hat and tie were outward perceptions of that struggle to change public views of a pilot's job. Do they still help that public view today? Who knows... But if wearing that f-in hat helps project that sacrifice made by our earliest pilots and maybe JUST MAYBE perpetuates that public mindset.... I'll continue to wear it. Consider it part of the job.

flame away, but you should read "flying the line" first and think about our miserable 'career'

What about all the skycaps that wear the hat with strips on there shoulders? Ill wear the tie(no clip on for me) but the hats got to go.

I saw a Southwest pilot wearing a hat last week. I didn't think they had them.

All the issues we have to deal with on the job (security, pay, retirement, etc) and yet guys are worried about having to wear hats. Geez.

The reason why it makes you feel like a clown is because of your own perception of yourself. In other words, if you made a million dollars to fly jets you'd wear a costume similiar to Jack Sparrow, including eye liner.

Rather... why not find self repsect from within and then you don't have to find "something" else to feel foolish about...

A poster a while ago stated it right... if you went to a play or watched a movie and lead actor wore jeans and a T-shirt, you'd have a harder time believing his character.

It is the same with our passengers.... you wear the hat for them.. not you or me. We all know you are the shi*tiest pilot.... just like the rest of us... no need to prove it... its just that your passengers need to believe that you are the best pilot today cause you are flying them today...

If we ditch the hat then we blend in with the rest of the airline workers... if you want to work your tail off to be a professional airline pilot only to be clumped together with non english speaking aircraft cleaners... go for it... but I don't think we will like the results..

Already the anti-hat wearers on this thread complain about how the hat affects their personal comfort. Again.. the hat is not about us... it is about the image to the folks that pay our salary.... the passengers.

No one can provide an arguement that the hat has a negative effect on us professionally... only personally...

Finally, I find it curious that you work for an ATL based company and you think you are the only one that doesn't wear hats.....

After a military stint of 11 years of wearing my "cover" everywhere I went, it was quite the pleasure to dump the hat and be free!!! We have enough items to put in the TSA bucket, one less thing is a plus... I couldn't imagine wearing a hat in the summers of FL-- they must get gross...

I think instead of worrying about hats, we should spend time on getting people to vote. They are the real A$$ Clowns.

Exactly. With all of the real issues we have to deal with, and people get all worked up over putting a frickin' hat on their heads for a few minutes a day. Honestly guys, is it really that damn difficult to put the hat on your head and look like a pilot for a few minutes while you walk from ops to the airplane?

agreed! Just one thing to keep in mind though, dont do the swa thing and make hats optional. It looks stupid to have half the guys wearing hats.

Actually ...it's only the kernals and the short guys who still wear the hats. That leaves the other 95% of us who don't.

And keeping the hats optional allows for the annual question at recurrent...."Are the hats coming back?"

This allows us vote in class by a show of hands....usually 24 for no hats....2 ( 1 being the dork who asked the question) being in favor of bringing the hats back

If you need to wear a hat to distinguish yourself from aircraft cleaners, you need help. You're also kidding yourself if you think your hat gives passengers a warm fuzzy about your skills. The passenger couldn't give a rats @ss what you wear, they just want the cheapest ticket. If you want an example; look at the Virgin America pilots. Totally non-traditional, but do you see passengers running from the plane?

Face it hat lovers, the only good excuse to wear your hat, is to cover your bald head.
