Sounds like the standard ALPA advise. "Fly it now...Grieve it later". MUCH later (years) it is either settled with a very small monetary compensation, or it is forgiven as part of the next contract negotiations.

There will always be friction regarding contract compliance. Yet generally it is at the fringes of interpretation that the controversies happen, and one is forced to "fly it now, grieve it later." (Which is less ALPA's stand, more the NMBs.)

5 years of unionzed airlines and I've never been pushed to where I felt I needed to file a grievance. Most middle managers just don't care enough, it's easier for all involved to just follow the rules. Benevolent management combined with a union contract is a really sweet deal (see the Southwest example.)

You obviously don't work for Alaska.
Our contract says deadhead segments over 5 hours of block time will require a seat in first class. Since we have started flying to Hawaii, some crews have had to deadhead on Hawaiian. The company's positition is that deadheading refers to online travel. You get a seat in coach. Go ahead and grieve it. I can't imagine any line pilot putting up with crap like that, but thanks to the ranks of yes-men check airmen that did put up with that a precedent has been set. We also don't qualify for Family Medical Leave Act because we are part-time employees. FMLA states that you need to work 1200 hours a year to be considered part time. FAA limits us to 1000 hours a year. I know, total BS, but that is Alaska Airlines.

J.O. had been using this as a selling point to recruit new hires so I just thought I would let the entire world know the truth. I am a CRJ F.O. and I have everything that I am eligible to bid on my standing bid. I just found out that my upgrade class will be next year at the earliest. This indicates that my upgrade time at Mesa will occur after the 3.5 year mark.

Non compliance with our contract.
Management refuses to meet with our negotiating committee at all or even release them to take care of union business.
Hawaiian Airlines is suing us.
The Delta “Expansion” will result in a net loss of planes which will reduce the companies need for pilots.

This is a recipe for a long upgrade and a very miserable work experience for you.

Only you can decide what is right for you. With virtually every airline hiring the most professional advise that I can give you is to steer well clear of Mesa in your job search.

If you are a newbie at Mesa and you happen to be on the CRJ your equipment lock is now permanent. You can only upgrade to CRJ captain. You can not upgrade to ERJ captain unless you are an ERJ F.O. If there is any doubt look at standing bid 07-19 dated 4/2/07 before you accuse me of not knowing what I am talking about. I am still stunned at the looks and comments that guys fresh off of IOE give me. Most argue with me. Just look at the bid and you will see. O yea call the union to. They will explain it just like I did.

Man that's bull&*&(SHTTTT!!!!!
Sorry to hear that! u should get out if u can of course.

I hope all the SkyWest pilots read this thread...a lot of them seem to feel that once you have a "contract" management can't violate it.
HA

a lot of Skywest Pilots are ex- Mesa pilots myself included. Mesa= Skywest Pilot development program

If you guys let the current trend continue, you won't be able to tell the difference between MESA and Skywest.

...and people wonder what is wrong with the newhires at SKW. Well, mainly the fact that many were once Mesa has alot to say about it.

Pretty soon bidding the China flying will become more attractive than US flying at Mesa.

I know Republic is hiring in a major way - and you get to fly much nicer equipment (Mesa fleet seems very ratty). If you are very junior (not near upgrade) and you meet Republic's minimums I would seriously consider it. Get out of Mesa while you still can!!!!!!!! It's like the Titanic.

And if they do, pilots can grieve it. Right now, if Skywest management wanted to change your "tems of employment" they just do it without pilots having ANY recourse other than just taking it or quiting.

But if Skywest management is as benevolent as many make them out to be, there will be no greivances to file.

legal recourse...oh yeah that's effective. Hey 5 years after it's settled you'll get your check for $100.

Five years? What evidence do you have that greivances take fives years to be settled? Each greivance has its own remedy. Some may be worth more than others. At XJT, the last one we won was worth over $400K!

Its not standard ALPA advice. Its federal law. Its called the Railroad Labor Act. But at least you have a legal recourse. At Skywest, they just do it and you take it our quit.

By the way, it doesn't take years. Each greivance has its own remedy that may be worth hundreds to one pilot our thousands to all pilots. Nothing is forgiven. It is used as negoatiating leverage for the CURRENT contract. This is how many contracts are amended before its amendable date.

Yeah, except the captain of the Titanic had enough sense of honor to go down with his ship after he sunk it.

That Mesa CEO will be the first to jump off when the inevitable happens, and will no doubt loot the treasury first too.

It is my guess he's already transferring money and assets to protected places. Many believe (myself included) J.O. to be corrupt. He's certainly ethically bankrupt.

Mesa is in the early-mid stages of collapse. Its business philosophy was time limited as sooner or later, something like what's happening there would've occured.

We can only hope Mesa ceases operations ASAP and somehow J.O. goes to Prison. With his money though, he'll more than likely "O.J." his way out of trouble.

Let's not forget that when he was a stockbroker (with numerous terminations on his resume), he had a history of unauthorized trading, misrepresntation and DOCUMENT ALTERATION. He was initially fined and suspended and finally the government revoked his license.

Google "Johnathan Ornstein" and select the Wikipedia Bio...................and smell the stench.

Mesa pilots, THIS is the cockroach you've hitched your trailer to.

Enjoy your Mesa career.

Hey...F.U. He was'nt here when some of us got on board. We want him and M.L. gone, a decent contract and the contiuation of jobs for the people here. You think your regional is so much better...you are a joke! Gee look at me I'm the 3rd tallest midget in the room. HA.

I'm entitled to my opinion and that's what it is.

Mesa sucked even before J.O. when they paid by the mile. Mesa has always been considered by most to be the "worst of the worst" regionals to work for along with certain hack 1900 outfits. A flying sweatshop, where pilots fly with splinters in their backs.

Obviously you signed up for it many years ago and have continued to tolerate it after many years.................how smart is that ?

Your erronous theory that all the other regionals aren't much better simply because your own experience is only with Mesa, is ...............well, erronous.

My guess is Mesa will end up under BK by the time all the lawsuits mangle Mesa's finances. I wouldn't be surprised if many of your mainline partners are in the early stages of figuring out how to bail from Mesa association as apparently you're cancelling large amounts of flying as the managment burns the furniture to heat their house. Perhaps Mesa will move all their RJ's to China ?

Good luck on your new contract when the BK demon knocks on Mesa's door.
