I have over 5000 hours two type ratings and at my new job my captain has not let me fly. He is extremely intimidating and a part owner in the airplane. How long does it normally take SIC's to get the controls. We have lots of dead legs and he hasn't even offered. Is this normal?

One day your owner-pilot will get a hot assistant and then he'll spend most of his time in the back. However, he still might do the takeoff and landings, so it might not seem like an improvement.

I've been there, and I can tell you if you can't talk the guy about flying a couple empty legs then the whole situation is probably unsafe.

With 5000 hours, you should know that it is not normal. So if it were me, I would speak up and ask, how am I supposed to keep my skills in check if all I do is talk on the radio's. Be assertive, and let him know that you are a PILOT, not a full time radio operator, and if he does not trust your ability to fly, with or without passengers, then perhaps he has the wrong person for the job.

This type of position is not helping your career or your worth as a pilot. So take ACTION, make a command decision.

Time to start looking elsewhere. It's not 1975 anymore, the days of intimidating control freak captains is supposed to be over. Something about not safe comes to mind.

Sounds like dooshbagery at its finest. The first rule of CRM is speak up if something is bothering you, so try that and if he's not receptive tell him to bugger off and find a better job.

what he said (i agree)

Sounds like the Captain is the one who is intimidated! The best time to find a job is when you have one!

Leenick speaks the truth... Normal practice is to alternate legs, or at least let the FO fly the empty legs until the CA is comfortable. Not knowing you personally, but basing this soley on your resume, I would say you are more than qualified to be an actual crew member and not the gear slinger.

Good Luck!

Get out of there. The so called captain is afraid, and does not have confidence, that is why he can't let go of the controls. The truth is he is not a good pilot and if anything goes wrong he will blame you for it.:smash:
