Hey Guys,

Can anyone tell me what mins are competitive for Delta? I tried a a search but didn't come up with anything.

Are they taking guys with 135 backgrounds?

Or should I stop worrying about experience, find a senior captain at ATL and mow his lawn every week ... ?

If it's the General he'll prob. want his bushes pruned too..

right from the guy in charge this weekend at Air Inc : They are looking for the 'whole person ' concept......a great all around package, no one single thing will help or hurt you.......just repeating what I heard this weekend.

someone with the mins could get hired and someone with 10 K could get hired....

Either way they had a great booth at Air Inc! VERY positive experience!

That kind of comment is really getting old.

Agreed and when companies stop hiring based on race and gender, I will stop posting my distaste for hiring practices at the airlines. Set the standard and stick to it, no matter what dangles between one's legs or the color of their skin. Until the discrimination ceases, I will voice my opinion!

I'm curious to know what you're basing this on. Are you familiar with the precise demographic composition of any airline's interviewees and/or new hires, or are you assuming the worst? I (and a few thousand lawyers) would be very interested to hear your proof of gender or racially based hiring practices. Proof.

My only comment is Delta is not as bad as some of the others.

With less than 30 seconds on Google, I found pages recent of gender and race preferenced aviation scholarships & job offers. You can not write with candor that women and certain (not all) minorities find open doors and invitations where other candidates find very long lines of similar candidates. There is not an equality of opportunity....

Thanks for that info, I certainly didn't realize the numbers were that skewed. I appreciate the eye-opening lesson...

Right now, there seems to be enough opportunity for anyone, or any demographic, to get the call. Some might have to work a little harder or perservere a little longer - but the opportunity is there.

One thing I like about Delta is that their interview process is very objective.

What does it take to get to the interview? That is the problem. Different set of rules dependent upon your race and gender. Dr. King would be disappointed.

I think that the quickest way to get the call would be to have someone walk your stuff in. Either to the CPO or to pilot recruitment. That seems to be the way to get an app looked at.

I'm less interested in alleged race/gender discrimination than I am in discrimination against people without 121 backgrounds.

In a nutshell: I'm trying to determine if I should quit my job flying Citations and take a 30 percent cut in pay to become a street captain on a Saab 340 in order to pile up turbine PIC time faster and check off the 121 box on my resume.

It will hurt financially in the short term, but it would be worth it in a year or two if it improved my chances with Delta (or SWA, etc.)

I currently have about 400 hours of PIC captain time (signing for the airplane, NOT just manipulating controls) and am building it up at a rate of about 300 hours per year ...

If Delta is looking at more than flight hours, then maybe I ought to sit tight where I am and not put my family on rice and beans for a year.

Geez, this industry sure gives you some crappy choices.

I think that would be best too, but I don't know a single person who works for Delta ... I know a few people at SWA, but don't have the 1000 turbine PIC.

Stupidly, I missed the Air Inc. conference in DCA.

I have written six letters of rec and four have gotten interviews. Here are the backgrounds.

1. Instructor at 121 regional 5,000 plus hours

2. Captain at 121 regional 5,000 plus and 1,000 pic

3. FO at 121 carrier with 7,000 hrs (had to pull some strings to help this one out)

4. Captain at 121 regional with 11,000 hrs. (he put his stuff in on Monday and got the interview email on Friday before my LOR was in)

300 PIC/yr is kinda thin unless you have a good in at DL. If ya have some great contacts you could be OK eventually... but if ya don't, you are up against tons that have several thousand of PIC turbine.
I would take the regional PIC job, at the very least it wouldn't hurt in the future, no matter where you end up.

Don't really know what the correct answer is to this "quandry".

I have had my application in for over a month now, total time 8000+ hours, 6000 PIC turbine/jet in 121 regional operations, and 2 very nice internal recommendations from 767 Captains known to me for many years. Still no word however.

Beginning to think it is my age, which I admitted to (48), or perhaps the volume of applications. Really would like to work for such a reputable company, and I honestly believe I should have lots of quality time remaining in my flying career to offer.

Somewhat "in limbo" right now.

Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.

Good luck to all that apply!

You need those 767 captains to go into Arnie's office and talk it up for you. Seems like that is that way to get your name in the hat. Good luck to you.

That is I think how I got my interview. Had a buddy check up on me and got the call the same day!

They have roughly 1900-2000 apps that they see as interviewable. That said, the only wany to quicken the process is to go have someone walk in to the hiring office and have them look at your app. They (Arnie and John) will both look at it and make a determination on whether or not you will get a e-mail. If your buddy takes the time to walk over there, they will take the time to look at it. There are no guarantee's but they can tell your contacts what you might be lacking. It gives you a better shot than you have now.

gotta pay

400 hrs of PIC, are you kidding me, hate to break it to ya but your chances of getting on to any legacy/LCC/cargo are slim to none. You're up against guys/gals with thousands of quaility military and 121 flight time.
Just because you would love to work there is meaningless, so would any pilot currently slugging it out at a regional. Taking the Captain position may not be the automatic ticket you think it is.
Not trying to bust on ya, just think you need to know what you're up against.

I think the best thing to do is to go to a job fair where Delta will be a participant. Besides Air inc, FltOps www.fltops.com does job fairs also. Show your resume to the rep and you can get a straight answer on whether you are competitive or not.

SoberIrishman,
I'm obviously way down the line from you. Good luck getting the interview.

9rj9,
Thanks for your input. You're obviously right and I appreciate the reality check.

ACL65Pilot,
Thanks for the info ... I sort of figured the number of qualified applicants was in the thousands, but wanted to hear from somebody who knows what they're talking about.

They have roughly 1900-2000 apps that they see as interviewable.

If I may..............just what would qualify as "interviewable?" Just having the basic minimums?

I've had my stuff in since they opened-up hiring, though, sadly, I've been stuck in Eagle F/O limbo for almost the last 3 1/2 years.

I talked to the Chief Pilot's office the other day in regards to a few of my friends that I have turned in LORs for...

Really the only way you're going to get called is with 1000 jet/turbine PIC time was the verdict.

So which is it? Why don't they make the competitive mins THE MINS, LORs and internal recommendations included. I don't quite get the whole no PIC requirement, if it's so moot. Airtran also has a low PIC req, but I assume that's also a fake min....Is the reason really to keep their options open or to CYA perhaps? Can somebody draw it in crayons for me as to why they define such disconnected mins if you need 6000 PIC to get the job? Just curious as to the reasoning..

Some have gotten hired with 0 PIC. It all depends on who you know.
