Is UAL giving preference to former interns on the application? Anyone got a call that was an intern?

Thanks

You don't do any service to former interns by posting these types of questions on a public forum.

You're basically saying, "I get to go ahead of all you guys that are more qualified than me, help me do it!"

Sorry Buddy, Just a question about something I earned a long time ago, Yea I guess I am not qualified with 7000+ and 5 Type ratings, so take a seat...

It's a new era at United. The old United hired minimally qualified and minorities, including interns.

The "NEW" united is looking only for "the best of the best" - that they can get for $29 an hour.

Gup

You had to be a sharp guy to get an intern slot. If you're REALLY smart, you'll go back to school and get a "real" job. If your "love of flying" is the draw, go make a bunch of money and buy a Pitts...

But if you're still convinced this is what you want to do, GOOD LUCK!! We can use guys like you :)

Your time and type ratings dont qualify you for nothin at UAL. Your 7K and 5 types dont mean much to anyone there and as a matter of fact, for a civilian applicant, it really aint much time. If your a minority (especially right out of college with a few hundred TT and 15-20 multi-time), thats what qualifies you....thats the "best of the best." Ha ha aha...best of the best...that kills me.

Sure I, as we all do, know several really good guys with plenty of heavy time that got turned down...for ohhh someone who is "more qaulified." Qualified meaning light single engine recip time....carb heat, mags, suction guage etc....Mmmmm, oooooooo, yaaaaaahhhhh. Just face it....your airline used to require only 200 TT on the app with no ATP , PIC, turbine time etc. Your airline hired a lot of folks who were pretty damn low time. Its just a fact son and is a scar that you shy away from and dont like to admit or acknowledge....I undertand. But now your gonna go above and beyond and hire the "best of the best."
Thats great...juuuusssst greeeeaaaat.

You are way off, it was 350TT in airplanes.

I can't believe some 10 or so years later guys are stilling bringing up the fact that UAL hired low time minorities, whether it be female or black.

This policy changed in the in the late 1990's early 2000. I know quite a few minorities who got turned down and / or did not even get offers.

Get over it people. Its in the past, lets leave it their.

No wonder why this profession is going down the toilet. Management knows pilots don't let anything go from the past, and they can just keep pushing those buttons.

Do you stay up at night worrying about what you could have done differently during your interview? Let it go & move on.

Evidently you stay up all night worrying if someone is taking a little stab at your airline. If it were me, I wouldnt stay up on flightinfo responding to someone at 0344 in the am as it is on your post. Get a life son.

Son? So you think you're some wise ol' man? Not wise enough to shake the failure at your interview (if you even had one). Let it go...your life will be happier when you shake the bitterness.

I'm a white male and I was hired here (just like the majority of UAL pilots). What was your problem? I think I know.

More UAL bashing....whatever.

Actaully, I didnt interview there. Im glad that I didnt either. After some of my good buddies got turned down for plenty of minorities, it just left a bad taste for me. Last but not least, I could care less who or what you are....no need to spell that out to me. Anyway, why are you up at 3:44AM writing on flight info? You must not have a life at all........I'll see you on your jumpseat though...thanks.

While I hesitate to "feed the troll"...

Maybe it took him that long to roll your fat @ss mom off him and get her out the door...

Maybe he's on a trip (a note for you, jets bigger than your barbie dream jet often cross more than one time zone)

UAL was hiring about 1000 a year for a few years. Of that 1000, about 900 were white males. Your idiot friends who couldn't get hired with over 10,000 hours weren't competing against the 100 "set asides", they were competing against the 900. (note: "friends" is code for YOU).

We usually hear the BS stories, told by the rejected idiot, without gettting the WHOLE story. When I interviewed, the two folks hired out of five interviewed were the TWO LOWEST TIME GUYS, and both were WHITE MALES.

Turned away:
10,000 hour "corp jet pilot": Post interview, asked me what a TR was (since they asked him and he didn't know) and admitted screwing up the "mental math" (you need to dump XXXX pounds of fule and the jet will dump XXXX lbs/min, how long does it take?). He had a nice brown suit to...

6000 hour 747-400 Capt: made the desk shake when they asked for paperwork from past violations or incidents as he dropped his.

3000 hour female scooter Capt (Cal Ex): Father was even a UAL Capt. got something like a 88% on her FE writtens...(nice show!!)

Let's review this again. The "hire rate" for minorities and women at UAL was LOWER than for white males. That means they turned away women and minorities with MORE HOURS to get to those they hired near the mins.

But we all know that hours=competence..
Steve Ritchie retired from the AF reserves with about 3000 hours and 5 MIG kills. I'm sure you're a much better pilot based on your hours... Dumb@ss.

0344....You got me there. Drove home from the airport around midnight...watched MMA stuff on TV while drinking a beer then signed on to the computer to answer emails. Hence, the very early post.

I got up early this morning to look for a "life"...not sure that I have one away from United anymore.

And actually, I dont really have one anymore either. Some of these place just suck the life right out of yah. I am reading you there.....

Tbags....you have obviously reached the zenith of perfection when it comes to stating a thought. Your choice of wording tells us about your character....or lack thereof.

As does your myopia and bigotry. But I honestly don't GAS what a troll thinks. Good luck on getting a job with a major...

Bigotry now? I am only stating facts tbag.

Again, your choice of words reveals your true character. Calling people names really shows that you are unable to express yourself in an educated or respectful manner. I would expect nothing less from an individual such as yourself.

100 of every 1000 hired were minorities.

Just curious what percentage of the applicants were minorities?

By the way, it is entirely possible that Steve Ritchie might suck in a crew environment. It is entirely possible as well, that AL Haynes would suck in a fighter.

Is UAL giving preference to former interns on the application? Anyone got a call that was an intern?

Thanks

I'm not trying to dog-pile on this whole bashing thing - I'm just curious.

What is so special about an intern? What did you guys do? We had one in my UAL new hire class in '99. He was 23 years old right out of UAX Dash-8s and was scheduled to be #1 on the list for something like the last 8 years of his career (this was obviously before age 65 and his furlough - don't know if he went back).

I can see hiring a former intern who went on to get real experience like the 7000 hour/5 type rating guy. It's just one extra thing to separate him from the rest. But what kind of experience could a 23 year old intern really bring to compete? You need to be 21 to get an ATP so it's not like he had spent very long in the business.

Enlighten me if you don't mind.

I'll enlighten you.

1) You need good grades in college at one of the usual aviation schools that have the program (not exactly Rhodes Scholar stuff).

2) Extracirricular activities (read: flight team dork, Alpha Eta Rho dork)

3) Family "member" at UAL (read: Daddy is a Captain)

4) Enough money to afford to take a semester off, pay for your move, pay for your housing, and work for free (read: Daddy is a Captain)

As with anything, there are exceptions. However, I can personally attest that the majority of the ones I know fit the above profile to the tune of at least 3 out of 4.

I don't know what interns you know, but I can tell you that when I did the internship, there was not one person (out of about 20) that were related to a United Pilot. Perhaps things were different when you did the internship. Additionally, most of the folks on the internship came from pretty humble backgrounds. I for one put myself through college and flight school without any help from family. My mother is a single parent who taught elementary school for fifteen years, making terrible money and trying to put two kids through college.

The internship was pretty competitive and required some hard work in college, extra-curricular activity, leadership of some sort, and good flying/technical knowledge. You had to complete a long application and interview process, and have some personality to pass the interview.

Once selected, an intern worked at United for a semester for no pay. This basically served as a three month interview by everyone at TK or WHQ, including your immediate pilot supervisor. There were some benefits including unlimited flight simulator time, jumpseating, newhire/recurrent/upgrade classes, CRM training, and of course pref-interviewing.

Being an intern doesn't make you a better person or make you more qualified. The reason interns get special consideration is simply because interns are a known entity. They have been screened already and have shown long-term interest in United. In general they drink the kool-aid and don't cause much trouble. They still have to meet the same minimums as everyone else. Some interns are great people, others are tools. United and most other airlines with such programs seem to have success with former interns. This is no different than any other industry.

I appreciate your perspective, but there is no need to mock the accomplishments of others. We all have different ways of getting to the same place, and in the end everyone who is qualified will have a chance for a job at a great company (assuming that exists anymore). Plenty of guys didn't do an internship in college and are senior to me at my company because they got into a flying job a semester or two before I did. Good on them, we all make our choices and take our own path.

.. Dumb@ss.

So the guy has a problem with mental math, you have a problem with "message board spelling" and I assume you got hired.

I hope everyone has seen the Youtube piece about the UAL crew that got lost at PVD. Another case of every airline talking about your airline during recurrent CRM training.
