I'm about to start my first IOE rotation and was wondering what kind of carry-on those of you who've been doing this for a while would recommend.

In my previous life as a corporate pilot, this was never an issue, since I never had to airline anywhere.

Now, obviously, this is an issue.

I realize this isn't the most provocative thread, but oh well.

Thanks!

I got my stuff from the stopover store. A great deal of wonderful pilot supplies for proffessionals such as ourselves.

No-Brainer; buy the roll aboard from Costco. When it breaks, bring it back and get another. When that one breaks, bring it back and get another.

I could go on and on.

strongbags.com

I just bought a bag from strongbags.com

It is worth checking out. It is much better than Travel Pro and is lighter than PNS, with replaceable parts that can be mailed to your home and repaired at home as well with a screw driver.

I like the insulated tote. Wet or dry, it is made to fly!!!

I use Victronex(swiss army folks).

Pricey but good quality and they stand behind their product.

no metal frame.

I knew SOMEONE would come up with this stupid idea. You're a professional, buy professional equipment.

Sure, Costco's price is cheaper in the SHORT term, but buy bags for 30 years and you're cost is huge.

I would debate the professional part, but that is a different thread entirely ;)

I personally have an older travel pro which has lasted over 7 years now, with and average of 210 days a year and 9 nights at a time. It works.

I have also had several friends use, and return Costco bags. I bought my wife one recently and it's great. For $99 I think it's unbeatable.

Do you guys ever check your bags? I've never tried to carry on a 22-25 inch roller bag, but it seems like it would be a pain in the arse.

I only check them occasionally. Usually only if I have to use the expandable portion after a long rotation or buying gifts.

I don't trust the airlines with my luggage; I barely trust them to get me to my destination.

K Mart blue light special for $59.00 works great (Concourse), 25 inch and carries easy on airlines even when expanded.

I have a 27" PNS bag and I never check it. I've never had a problem, although I always travel in uniform. Half the time I'm on an RJ anyway so it still gets thrown in the back.

Word of advice, Netjets does not care if you check your bag on the way home, but be careful checking it on your first day.

If the company airlines you to a plane on day 1 they expect you to be ready to go when you get there. Don't try and use the excuse of "I cannot do the trip - the airline lost my bag."

Does not go over well.

I am always skeptical about checking my bag. I never like to check things that I can't live without because they may loose it.

Since we are on the subject, guitars. I know some guys at NJA bring them on tours. Do you guys check them or carry them on the airlines. I'm going to DAL and I think I'm bringing my guitar this time. This way I don't spend all of my per diem on porn. It is like 15.99 for the cheap porn these days.

My problem has always been finding a good second bag. To hold my labtop,(outdated so still a little big) and some books and other small items. Any reccomendations?

Go get yourself an inexpensive travel guitar like the Washburn Rover ($150). Full length but still fits in an overhead. Sounds great. Leave the nice one at home.

Model 321A (the bottom model) is the best computer bag out there. The bag is reinforced with hard thick plastic which protects your computer, tons of pockets, expandable so when you STUFF it full of papers, books, and binders, it all fits AND you can zip it up.

Go pro and buy the stealth roller-bag. This computer bag will clip on nicely or attach via. a standard roller-bag hook. Either way they work perfectly together and WA-LA...you have a portable office.

I rarely have to leave anything behind on a trip using this combination - and I'm running a business out of the bag while I'm on the road - works perfect.
