Sad...Im the exact guy who will look at that job and go...hmmm...better than instructing and I'll get time. You guys are right, from what Ive seen, it has to end. Too many companies seem to take advantage of us coming up the line. It is horribly tempting though, especially when you have a wife and need the next step badly.

My question...whos gonna take the first step? Good luck. I dont want a job for $20-$25K. But i also cant wait forever. Im not 21 and fresh out of school and all the time in the world. I also have a wife. I could refuse to look at all jobs under $30K. But I might as well dig in and retire as an instructor.

Just being very humbly honest here with you guys who are down the line. I agree with the stop-whoring yourself, its screwing the rest of us...but I have to live and take care of responsibilities, too. So, what do I do?

Nasty little catch 22, huh?

Talk about having someone by the balls...

Ray, good for you man... at least you understand the big picture and btw, educate the others that you know of the importance of not continuing to feed these bottom feeders with talent. Let them have to hire unsafe and below par guys for those kind of wages and then have to deal with them on the line.

For you.. I'd say hold tight until you get to about 2500TT, and apply to some of the more reputable 135's like Swift Air that I mentioned above.. $50K to start and rapid advancement with an 8 and 7 schedule.. There are many such jobs, just look, network and it will fall into your lap.

Worse case, use one of these bottom feeders to get some experience for literally a couple of months and then jump ship as soon as you can, don't even give them their money's worth on their training.

Roger that.. just to add another humble .02 cents worth... I wouldnt hold the "bottomfeeder" to 135/91 guys as only to blame, theres plenty of 121 stuff out there, hiring at 500 TT and 50 ME, and those are the 20+ yr olds who are single and will live out of their car or some shack (like my first apt-lol!) for $18K a year. those regionals have to be catering to that demographic on purpose. why not? cheap work force! makes perfect sense. they know those guys will come work for them for those wages and QOL. who wouldnt? i moved to florida out of school for a jump pilot position paying $350/week plus the use of the old airstream camper on the DZ! LOL! not to mention the alledged activities that apparently went on in that camper prior to my arrival demanded a complete fogging of lysol! what a way to arrive halfway across the country to your first job!!! but, thats another story, anywho... I dont think its just the pilots, its the operators, and im sure you agree. theres the temptors and then theres the temptees. supply and demand.

and then...dont forget the insurance companies that keep up-ing the flight times. everytime i just get there, they go up another 500. argh. at least thats what it seems like. so in desparation, those of on this end start getting frustrated and go with anyone who'll wink at us just get the experience and keep moving.

but ive got a good attitude, realistic, but good and believe life isnt by chance. so hopefully ill hear something soon.

thanks!

Ray

Best of luck Ray... guys like you always rise to the top I've found. Keep in touch.

Yay for Ray

Great advice, everyone.

I've been in Ray's situation myself and it took 2500 hours plus a 1000 mile move to find work at a place that was not a bottom-feeder shady deal. I moved from Tampa too, so I am very familiar with the reputation of this company out of TPA.

I also know Ray personally, and if anyone reading this has an empty right seat in a jet somewhere and is willing to give a guy a chance, Ray's your guy.

Spoke with Tim today. Gave me all of the info on the company including the pay. $21,000 gear bi*ch. But, he said, it goes up to $23,000 after 90 days. Was very evasive about captain pay. He said "Captain pay? Well, captain pay is captain pay..." Almost as if he was secretly embarassed about telling me. When I told him that the pay was too low for me, he asked me what would be reasonable, to which I replied "$30,000 minimum!" He then argued with me and basically told me that was ridiculous and became quite obnoxious. Then he hung up on me.... Awesome.
Yep! Tiny-Tim does get upset when you question his sanity.

That sucks, I am making over 30K currently at a 135 job flying 210's. I know I am going to have to take a cut for my next job which sucks, but still...

Southern Air

Don't waste your time with that company! There's better out there. Just don't get in such a hurry.

OK, Ray. I am looking to hire two complete Westwind crews in the next couple of months for a Part 135 operation out of Gainesville, FL. See my post dated 5/30/2007, titled "North Florida Charter Operator Looking for a Westwind Crew."

I also need C-414 pilots as well.
