Just did a CDG to DXB flight and flew right over Iran. That just doesn't seem right.

We're not at war with them. Our governments are just pi$$ing on each other's shoes right now. Oh, and they are bent on the destruction of Israel, too... ;) TC

Some good folks, but some strange government with the Mullahs in charge. I think the middle class there might actually be "civilized" if we can avoid polarizing them against us in the next 2-3 years.

On the other hand--one of the nicest things about the OV-10 was the relief tube. It allowed a from of free expression you could never do in the F-15.

The Iranian people are generally moderate and somewhat worldly. They're actually pretty nice. The government, on the other hand, is a disaster waiting to happen.

I overlfew Iran and Iraq (when overflying Iraq was just getting approved) many times. No big deal. Flew into Iran many times in the past (corporate) as well: Kermanshah,, Kish Island, Khoy, and Tehran. Nice people, not unlike us. They're all just getting by day-to-day unable to do much about their own government. As if we're able to get our government to listen to our concerns...considering this, the people of Iran are no different than us.

I RON'd Tehran, Kish, and spent 3 hrs on the ground for the opening ceremony of Khoy airport (New airport in North part of the country). We were even chartered by the Minister of Transport of Iran once. Our Shiekh was not happy about it though (most Arabs aren't fond of the Iranians).

DAL overflys Iran, so does NW. In fact, sometime in '05 NW did a divert into Tehran due to a cargo compt fire indication. The only hold up for them was who was going to pay the fuel bill. I believe they got airborne 3.5 hours later.

How it flying over all of those "-STAN" countries...like getting out of DEL until you exit to the EU airspace.

I've seen 120 dme to the Baghdad VOR before, heading to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Fedex is over Iran daily.

By the way, my uncle is Iranian (but naturalized USA) and is really a neat guy.

I was pleasantly surprised the first time I dealt with Iranian ATC, and have had many pleasant experiences with them. They seem like normal friendly people just like us who have a genuine interest in keeping metal from touching metal.
Can't that much for other places such as Africa or the Stans. the extent of thier "services" seems to be to make sure to get your reg# so they know who to send the bill to. Other than that you're on your own.

I recall a recent NW flight that had to divert into Tehran and IIRC they were treated quite nicely.
The government, on the other hand...........

Flew over for the first time last year..I had the headphones & was ready for a English second language guy, when this Brit voice came over the radio,, Roger FedEx. maintain FL350 report XXx. Blew my socks off. rip

Weave got a couple of ex-Iran air pilots in our ranks. These are the NICEST down to earth folks, that I have ever had the pleasure to deal with.

Flying over Iraq is no big deal as long as you are higher than MANPAD range. We go over it all the time. The military controllers are fine.

Wonder what the ATC fees are like though.

Nail on the head. We go through there airspace daily, and always see FedEx passing off the wing.

The controllers in Iraq are USAF. They aren't very experienced, but they mean well and try.

I remember one day in ORTL a Flight Check airplane told the approach controller that the needed to fly a certain approach. The approach controller had no clue as to what a Flight Check callsign was, and told him she could not approve his approach because the approach was NOTAM'd out until it could be checked.

I keyed the mic and told Flight Check, "She has no clue." He replied back to me, "I think your'e right." He then asked her for a full stop landing and a telephone number.

That's just one of the many chuckles I got from the USAF ATC in the year I was there.

As for my civilian side of life, I've been over Iran many times and each time was a pleasure. I know many Iranians, and they are not in line with the hard line government. Very nice people, actually.

I still don't think the ones over here can be trusted 100%... sleeper cells for the likes of Akhmedinajid, or whatever his name is.

I'm voting McCain in '08. He'll Bomb Iran for sure... something "W" should have done four years ago.

My favorite part of flying over Iran has been seeing the nuclear power plants. Thinking of that uranium they are enriching. THANKS JIMMY CARTER!!

China's nuclear power plants are a sight too.

I agree... Carter is not the only one at fault. You have to include Billary Clinton in the mix of incompetents too.

Oh, I'm just talking about Carter's Laissez faire foreign policy (read head in the sand). The Shah was such a bad guy? Well we have learned what a really bad guy is. The people of Iran long for the Shah now.

Carter also gave us beautiful deregulation.........

Anyway, next time you hear the phrase "worst President EVER!" consider the previous two facts........... oh, and Stagflation.

We did DEL-EWR a couple weeks ago. Not too much of a problem. Talked to Lahor, Kabul, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and probably someone else in there. No problem except sometimes the terrain seems to make radio contact difficult.

I agree with you on the Carter thing, he really fu<ked it up. Iran and the US used to be great allies. As a matter of fact when the Shah died nixon attended the funeral.

On the Subject of the Power plants and the Uranium enrichement, they have a right to do so. They were the 7th nation to sign th nuclear Non-prolification treaty back in the late 60's. That treaty under international law gives them the right to enrich uranium. Now I see the concern with the regime and all. There is a deal being made as I'm writing this that will allow Iran to do this. Behind the scenes business has been going on for years between our two countries.
Believe it or not the guys running Iran are not idiots, everything you see is just politics and business. They just have been doing it for a few thousand years longer than us and do things differently. I bet we will see the relations getting better soon.
