Our overflight fees going right to Hamas, Hezbollah and to those SOB's in the revolutionary guard that are providing advanced IEDs to militants in Iraq......just ain't right. Even if their english is better than the French. Of course our oil money is going in the same direction...

Just curious, but do they have radar coverage over there in the Stan's and Iran, etc?

Not really. A few of the Russian states have it but they tend to use it for advisory only instead of control and will ask for estimates and position reports over the FIR boundaries and control sector changes.

I'm sure they all can see targets for defense purposes but their system doesn't seem to be sophisticated enough to handle the airline traffic stream. I'm guessing there's some dude down there with a whiteboard and a dry-erase marker figuring this stuff out.

Maybe if I call ahead of time I can go visit Kabul Control.

We fly over Iraq going to Bahrain/Dubai and over Iran on the way back - rarely a problem. Iraq will get you in radar contact almost the whole way across the country but Iran's coverage seems more spotty.

No big deal, but make sure you have your Iraqi squawk!

I've seen 120 dme to the Baghdad VOR before, heading to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Fedex is over Iran daily.

By the way, my uncle is Iranian (but naturalized USA) and is really a neat guy.

Wow, Huck, never thought I'd say this, as I've read your posts over the years, but I've flown over the Baghdad VOR.

Quite interesting at night. You see a lot of low-level traffic and wonder if most of it is our own.

Up at Oshkosh one year I met one of the F-117 guys that went in over Baghdad the very first night of the first Gulf War.

He said the Iraqis knew they were there and pointed everything at the sky and shot randomly.

He watched his hud tape later and on his hot mike he would pray for awhile, then curse like a sailor as they got close, then pray some more.....

The first time I flew over Baghdad, it was at night, and I was amazed at all of the fires. I asked the controller if it was normal, and after a chuckle he replied "Welcome to Iraq"

As far as the comment about altitude being the key to a safe overflight, I've got to disagree. When I flew over Iraq, (our overflights were at FL180 or above) I wasn't worried about being shot out of the sky (well, maybe just a little), I was afraid of an inflight catastrophe requiring an immediate emergency landing.

I flew over Iran today out of Dubai. I was on radar north out of DXB, then after a while was handed out of radar approaching Afghanistan.

There isnt much radar in Afghanistan. Only around Kabul/Bagram and Kandahar.

Iran controllers spoke very good english. Afghan controllers are US.

........... I have never felt so safe as over Iraq....... We've got US controllers, CAP, full radar.............. AWACS, I mean what more support could you ask for (all that stuff is available in the US but not already airborne and alert)? Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar a short ride away? Hell, the whole Arabian Gulf region has great Brit expat controllers.

Now, about that nuclear Iran........... that is something to be scared of!

I bet we will see the relations getting better soon.

We can hope, since the Iranians are probably a bit closer to western values than a lot of countries over there! Sure, the politicians and the Mullahs love to posture, but the regular folks are pretty normal.
