Where is my free food? Colgan is winning so far with free gifts. Get me a Ipod nano or something. Something better than a plastic cup and tshirt ( i never got the plane that really pisses me off)

less then industry standard while living at one of the most expensive places on the planet

I think you pro-union guys are a little mis-informed. Getting a union on property is not going to make the guidelines a contract. The company will be able to change policy at their free will until a ratified contract is in place. My company has a union with no first contract yet, and the union is absolutely powerless. The company just issued a new bulletin saying company policy has changed, and there is nothing I or the union can do. Our union has been on property for almost 4 years and we still don't have a contract. All I do is pay 55 bucks a month for nothing. Now that being said, we are getting closer to our first contract, and when we do our lives should be much better. But don't be mis-lead into thinking having a union on property is going to make the company accountable, and things will be better overnight. Thats not how it works. I am very much pro-union, and I love anything that protects us from our screwed up management. I think if Colgan gets a union, a few years from now the quality of life could be a lot better. Just dont be fooled into thinking it will be better overnight. Good luck Colganites.

This is not correct. The company is able to change pay/work-rules, but only under certain circumstances. The company would have to be able to show that the decision is a necessary decision to protect the viability of the company. For instance, if Colgan were to lose 10 airplanes without any replacements, the company would be able to change things because their profits would take a huge dip. Or, if the company were to enter bankruptcy, they would be able to change things to protect the solvency of the company. Barring some sort of similar event, the company cannot just change your pay and workrules at a whim after a union is certified. To do so would be considered union-busting activities, and the law clearly does not allow for it.
 
ihateyourego, good points however, there is a BIG wildcard with that rational.

Colgan and Pinnacle are contractors to bigger carriers. Continental bought, financed and is paying A LOT of money for these airplanes to have them flown by their contractors. If Colgan has a union but no contract that leaves a lot of questions with the pilot group. Who is not to say that Continental would apply pressure to Pinnacle/Colgan to meet Colgan ALPA at the negotiating table to take ANY questions out of the equation, set up a contract to provide for pay, QOL issues and allow for a seamless integration and start up of this new fleet type?
 
isn't the big boss over at ALPA a 777 capt for Continental?

As for CJC (PCL) management, it seems to me, that, if you have no intention of screwing us, you would not care if there was a union.

I don't know if a lot of the anti-union people really understand how much better their lives could be. Colgan pilots would go NUTS for some of the most basic things that people at unionized carriers take for granted.
 
yeah like calling in sick.... I have not because I am worried that i will get yelled at and screw over my mates since we don't have reserve. Also, is it illegal for a scheduler to ask what is wrong?

That's a good question. I know the dispatch lines are recorded so they can be pulled if need be. At my last employer the crew scheduling lines were recorded as well. So pretty much once you called in "sick" it was game over.
Its really irrelevant because the liability is so high in the event of a mishap.

There are two sides, actually three sides, to this story. First, at any airline people abuse the sick time as a way of lengthening time off. They make it bad for all of us that don't abuse the system. Second, we have no commuting clause or personal days so your only option when the fourth flight you've tried to get on is oversold is to call out sick. Third, 9 out of 10 times our reserve coverage is not in a position to be able to cover a sick call with a reasonable amount of lead time.

I guess the flip side to this is that since we all know each other at our outstations we tend to "cover" for each other. On one or two occasions I've traded work days to prevent sick calls. Scheduling was always good about making the changes at midnight with no paperwork to make it work.

I wonder how that works, you have to stay 10 feet away from people at the pharmacy, shouldn't the company have to respect privacy?
 
I think they try they just are well-informated about privacy laws. It is the small company family syndrom still in effect. O well.... I will just clean the yoke real good for you all!!!!
 
Reminds me of the guy that called in sick and "was not" pressured into reversing the call. When scheduling called him less than an hour later he was in the emergency room so they further "didn't" pressure him by telling him he was being taken off the schedule indefinately.

I really wouldn't discuss a reason for a sick call with a scheduler anyway it if was personal. I can see having to explain myself to the chief pilot or to the director of ops but not a crew scheduler. I might volunteer what the issue is, (puking all night...etc...etc...) but I think if I was asked I would just tell them to have the chief pilot contact me if he has any concerns. (I haven't called out in well over a year.)
